Obituary
MADISON-Vernon E. Awes, age 85, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at St. Mary's Hospital with his family by his side. He was born on Jan. 26, 1932, in San Diego, Calif., the son of Frizhoff and Lucille (Roy) Awes. Vernon graduated from Winona High School and was the president of his senior class. During his high school years he was a member of the wrestling team and was the state runner up in wrestling. He was just elected to Winona wrestling hall of fame. Vernon also enjoyed singing and was a member of Sonny Songsters quartet who placed second in the state talent show. At Luther College he was a three year letter winner in wrestling, and captain of the wrestling team. He sang with the Luther Nordic Cathedral Choir. On July 1, 1956, he married Marlys Anderson, and in 1959, Vernon graduated from Luther Seminary and was ordained a Lutheran minister. Together as life partners of 60 years, Vern and Marlys served parishes in Esmond, Nd., Spring Grove, Minn., and then he became a U.S. Navy Chaplain where he served at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Seattle, Wash., and Patuxent River, Md. In addition, he served a thirteen month tour with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In total, Vernon served eight years active duty and another 20 years of active reserve and retired as a U.S. Navy Captain. Upon retiring, he served at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, Hope Lutheran in McFarland, 3 Point Parish in Cross Plains and Black Earth, and was a missionary in Guam. During their travels, Vern and Marlys collected over 400 nativities from all over the world. Vern was a caring and gentle person whose life was about serving others. What made him special was that he related to people, and accepted people for who they were. He was genuinely interested in others and had a special gift of making people feel good about themselves. Vern put his faith in God and family first. Vernon is survived by his sons, Phillip and Timothy (Catherine); grandchildren, Adrianna, Marina and Aristotle Awes; brother, Melvyn (Sue) Awes; brothers-in-laws, Paul (Cheryl) Anderson and Peter (Diane) Anderson; sisters-in-law, Pam Sadlo and Laurie Fossa; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Pastor Vern,
I will never forget you! You were so special to me when I was a teenager growing up, trying to find what and where I should venture with my life; influencing silently the choices I would make. Your hug, conversation, smile and the way you could make me feel was so genuinely special.
In addition, I "Thank You" for being the minister who married me.
I hope you and your family can rest in peace knowing the great impact your huge heart has made to so many.
May you find eternal happiness and comfort in the Lord's eternal promise. Go in Peace and Serve the Lord.

Pastor Awes and Marlys showed me the love of Christ when I was a young officer, wife and mother far from home on the island of Guam. You baptized my first born son, wading in the Philippine Sea and singing "Jesus Loves Me this I Know." You used to say that "Go Tell it on the Mountain" was our song at the Lutheran Church of Guam because Guam was just an underwater mountain. I will think of you when I sing that song this Christmas. With love and gratitude!

Pastor Awes and I connected instantly when we first met. I was on the Call Committee for a new pastor for St. John's Lutheran Church in Mazomanie. He was only slightly taller than me, and I could nearly look him in the eye! We always laughed about that. He was always so vibrant, and we always loved it when he burst out in song during his sermons. What a wonderful man. My sympathy and love to all of you. He is now with his loving wive Marlys again.

I served with Vern as a younger associate for 8 months at Black Earth, Wisconsin. His hugs as the people filed out after the service were memorable for me. I have since become a hugger, taking the same risk of maybe being misunderstood. It goes under the category of non-verbal communication for me now in Mexico where words in Spanish don't come so easily. Thanks, Vern for wearing your heart on your sleeve. Rennard Svanoe

Grandpa Awes and Grandma Marlys were always so kind to my sister and I. I was always proud of his Navy service in Vietnam as well.
