Obituary

MADISON – Karen Anne "Rosie" Kornell, age 57, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at UW Hospital. She was born on Aug. 14, 1958, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Robert V. and Ruth M. (Stoetzel) Kornell. Karen attended St. Maria Goretti School and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1976. Her involvement in Girl Scouts and Explorers led her to her lifelong career of Water Safety Instruction and Life Guarding. She taught and guarded for the Madison East YMCA for many years. Karen also worked in the bakery at Sentry Foods. She spent her summers teaching swimming and guarding at Hill Farm Swim Club, which was her favorite place, "my little piece of heaven." Karen taught Faith Formation/First Communion at St. Dennis Parish in Madison. Karen is survived by her mother, Ruth M. Kornell of Madison; daughters, Erin (Matthew Endicott), Courtney (Kevin Butler) and Abbie; grandchildren, Joshua, Dezaray, Jaxon and Emma Belle, all of Madison; brothers, Bob of Minocqua, Mike (Marina Zupan) of Estero, Fla. and John (Diane) of Waunakee; sisters, Peggy (John) Herman, Mary (Jane) and Christine (Ron) Ladell, all of Madison; and sister-in-law, Annette Kornell of Marshall. She is also survived by many dear relatives and friends. Karen was preceded in death by her father, Robert V. Kornell; brother, Joe Kornell; and many other dear family members. Funeral services will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Rd., Madison, at 1 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, with Father Randy Timmerman officiating. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, and at the church from noon until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association of Wisconsin or the Diabetes Association of Wisconsin. The family of Karen would like to thank the UW medical staff for the many years of great care. Karen will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
