MADISON- Richard C. Smithers, age 87, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012. Richard was married to his one true love, his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Smithers. Born in Fond du Lac on December 3, 1924, he married his love on June 15, 1946. How do we say goodbye to a caring husband, great father and best friend…we don’t know yet, but it will come. He knows how much he was loved and how much he will be missed. We have lost a man that was simply the best in every way and we are so deeply saddened. Dad give Mom a hug and tell her we are sorry we kept you apart so long. He is survived by his children, Debbie (Bruce) Victor, Jill (Steve) Berryman, Jacquie (Erik) Infield and Dean (Kimberly) Smithers; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Our family would like to extend our thanks to staff at The Jefferson, St. Mary’s Care Center and Dean Health Center and the many hands within. Reverend Dietrich Gruen we thank you. Memorial services will be held now that Mom and Dad are together again in the near future. We love you.

You can't choose your parents but I, my sisters Jill,Jackie and my brother Dean were truly blessed. We had the best of the best! I thank you Mom and Dad,you are always with me. I LOVE you so much and will miss you daily. I hope you are dancing together in heaven.LOVE FOREVER, Debbie

My Grandparents were always GREAT fun.
As far as I can tell, my earliest memories are of a trip my Grandpa and Grandma took me on when I was 5 years old. It was the Bahamas, and I remember a walk on the beach that culminated in my grandma and I standing side by side, looking at what my grandpa was pointing at.....he was describing a fishtail sticking out of a sandbar, just far enough away that he couldn't get us close enough to it. He had to spend 15 minutes trying and pointing, he was fascinated by it and wanted us to see too. I remember my grandmother saying "oh Dick, honestly, we can't see anything". He walked over, took my hand, walked me as close as we could get and said, "you see there Lad, she's right there". I think he convinced me.
That trip offered the first of many memories I have of my grandpa, and my grandma. Countless fishing trips, countless hours together in the pool.....he tought me how to bait a hook, dig for worms, he let me steer the boat when I probably shouldn't have been steering a boat :-), and he taught me how to swing a golf club, how to eat ribs with your hands and why you should eat ribs with your hands. He taught me that you can fix it yourself, because he always did.
My grandpa and grandma showed me very early what a loving house and a big family is all about.....there was always love, there was always lots of fun. While we're all here at this time, I hope the two of them are making jokes, and cutting the rug together.....having lots of fun, just as I remember them, always.
I will miss you Grandpa.
