Elton Edwin Paus

MADISON-Elton Edwin Paus, age 88, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on Nov. 23, 1924, in Auburn Township, Chippewa County, Wisconsin to Edwin F. and Corene (Rehm) Paus. He spent his early childhood in Madison, graduated from Waunakee Union Free High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II as a member of the 100th Bomb Group. He married Evelyn Gundlach on Aug. 1, 1945, although he always joked that it was July 31, 1945, due to a clerical error on their marriage certificate. His interests always and foremost included hunting deer and turkey preferably with bow and arrow. He shot his first turkey with the bow at the age of 84 . He worked five months last year at Gander Mountain in the archery department and was pretty proud of that. He was always available to work on an on-call basis for Yahara Materials. He also enjoyed his ham radio and computers (yes more than one), and all the friends and connections that he made thru them. Elton was proud to sit on the Board of Directors for the Central Wisconsin Repeater Association. He especially enjoyed his Sunday breakfasts at the Pine Cone Restaurant with his buddy, Chuck Skooglun. He treasured being on the Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C. April 21, 2012 with his son, Don. He was a long time, proud member of the NRA. He delivered Wisconsin State Journal motor route for more than 30 years. He worked for the Charter Street Heating Plant and retired from employment with the State in 1989. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn; and his children Kathie Smith, Bob (Bev) Paus, Connie (John) Roewer, Vicki Volenberg (Dick Drager), Mark (Carol) Paus and Don (Jill) Paus. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Herbert (Jeanne) Gundlach, Howard Gundlach, and Jerry (Kathy) Gundlach; sisters-in-law, Jean Wescott, Peg Riley and Sue Gundlach; many, many nieces and nephews; and his dog and best buddy, Tuey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Corene; his in-laws, Ged and Frances Gundlach; his brother, Reg; sister-in-law Juanita; his son-in law, Bill Smith; his great-grandson, Blake; brothers-in-law, Tom Gundlach, Bill Wescott and Jack Riley; and sister-in-law, Mary Lou Gundlach. Our thanks go out to the Madison Fire Department EMS Station 5 and the doctors and staff at St. Mary's Emergency Room. A Celebration of Life and Open House will be held at Elton and Evelyn's home from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013.
