Hanson, Doris J. MONONA/ MCFARLAND - Doris J. Hanson, age 81, died on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006. She was born on Oct. 24, 1925, in Madison, to Frank and Gladys (Hoveland) Hanson. Doris was a lifelong resident of the Madison area. She graduated from Madison East High School and attended UW-Madison. Doris was secretary for the State of Wisconsin, Department of Administration, from 1983 until 1987, appointed by Governor Tony Earl. She was president of the Village of McFarland from 1991 until 1995, and trustee from 1988 until 1991. Doris served as state representative, 48th Assembly District in the State Assembly from January 1993 until May 1998, initially elected in 1992 and re-elected in 1994 and 1996. She was executive director of TEACH Wisconsin from 1998 until May 2002, appointed by Governor Thompson, reappointed in January 1999 and appointed by Governor McCallum in February 2001. Doris was currently the senior vice president of First Weber Group since 1989. She served as a board member of Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation, Executive Committee of Womens Fund, Chair of Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, American Red Cross, Chair and Audit/Personnel Committee of Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development, United Way Housing in Action Leadership Team, First Weber Group Inc., First Weber Group Foundation Inc., Wisconsin Eye, and Board of Administrative Oversight, appointed in September 2006 by Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson. Doris was also a member of the National Organization of Women, TEMPO of Madison, and Monona Chamber of Commerce. She served as commission member of the Commission for the Study of Administrative Values and Efficiency (SAVE), Dane County Regional Airport Commission, Governors Blue Ribbon Commission on 21st Century Jobs, Governors Blue Ribbon Task Force on Telecommunications, Governors Commission on Glass Ceiling, and Human Resources Reform Commission. Doris served on the following Legislative Committees, Colleges and Universities, Joint Committee on Audit, Joint Committee on Information Policy, co-chair of Joint Committee on Rules, and co-chair of Legislative Council Special Committee on Shared Government Services. Her awards included the First Advocate Award from the UW-Madison Alumni Association in 1998, YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in 2001, and Atwood Community Center, Thoughtful, Committed Citizens Award in 2004. Doris started the Ursula Schmitt Education Fund at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Doris is survived by her brother, Frank Hanson; a nephew, Jeffrey Hanson of Reston, Va.; a niece, Gloria DeVall of Jacksonville, Fla.; great-nieces; and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Gloria. Funeral services will be held at MONONA TERRACE COMMUNITY AND CONVENTION CENTER, One John Nolen Drive, Madison, at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, with the Rev. John Swanson presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006.
