Tempelis, Laurence D., M.D. NEENAH - Laurence "Larry" D. Tempelis, age 58, of Neenah, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at the University Hospital in Madison, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Larry was a devoted and loving husband and father, who always put his family first. He married Jane Larson, the love of his life, on July 3, 1970. He also raised three children, daughter, Melinda of Neenah, twin sons, Eric (Jenny) of De Pere and Peter (Anne) of Johnson Creek, who cared deeply for him and were blessed to have him as a father. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor (George) Austreng of Superior; brothers, Constantine (Nancy) of Berkeley, Calif. and James (Barbara) of Seattle, Wash.; and many dear relatives and friends. On April 18, 1948, Larry was born to Harry and Thelma (Hoff) Tempelis, a Greek immigrant cobbler and nurse, in Superior. He graduated from Superior Senior High School in 1966, Wisconsin State University-Superior in 1970 and the UW-Madison Medical School in 1974. He completed a residency at the UW Medical Schools clinical campus at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee, in 1976 and a Hematology/ Oncology fellowship at Tufts University, New England Medical Center Hospitals, Boston, Mass., in 1980. Larry believed in serving others and inspired many, including his children, to maximize their educational potential and enter professions of service. As a physician, he was a passionate clinician, researcher, teacher and patient advocate. He loved the practice of medicine, especially caring for patients and their families. He served as a hematologist/ medical oncologist and assistant professor at Mount Sinai Medical Center from 1980 until 1995; Burlington Memorial Hospital in Burlington, from 1995 until 2000; St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, from 2000 until 2001; Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh, from 2000 until 2006; and St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, from 2002 until 2006. Dr. Tempelis was certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was a proud and committed member of many professional organizations, including being a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Association of Immunologists and the American Federation for Clinical Research. He was also a proud alumnus of the UW-Madison and devoted follower of the Wisconsin Marching Band, of which his children and nephew have been members. Services will be held at the MONONA TERRACE in Madison. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, from 2 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. with a service at 5 p.m. Interment will be held Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at Forest Hills Cemetery, Madison. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Walter Longo, nurse Dawn Reininger, the staff of the University Hospital Hematology/ Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic and B6 Hospital Service, as well as the supportive staff of the Agnesian Healthcare System of Fond du Lac.
