Ms. Helen R. Grefsheim

Grefsheim, Helen R. STOUGHTON/ MADISON- Helen R. Grefsheim, age 92, of Stoughton, formerly of Madison, died on Friday, Dec. 8, 2006. She was born on Aug. 22, 1914, to Ole and Marie Nelson. Helen graduated from Madison East High School in 1933. After high school, she was very active in sports, especially softball. She played shortstop for the Kennedy Dairy Milk Maids and once drove in the winning run, enabling her team to represent Wisconsin in the National Softball Tournament held in Chicago, Ill. She later attended Madison Business College and Madison Beauty College to help launch her career in cosmetology. Helens Beauty Salon was a favorite place for many long-time customers at several near eastside locations. Helen married Norman P. "Pete" Grefsheim at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, in Iowa, on Nov. 25, 1939. They loved ballroom style dancing, and were once highlighted as the spotlight dancers at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. However, their real passion was building and remodeling homes, which included more than 25 in the Dane county area. Pete and Helen built the Amble Inn Tavern on "Willy St." in 1966. They operated it for 15 years before taking a short retirement in Coolidge, Ariz. They were lifelong members of Our Saviours Lutheran Church. Helen will always be remembered for her vibrant life style, her quick wit, her endless energy and her happy smile. She was a very loving wife and mother and will be dearly missed by family and friends. Helen is survived by two sons, Jon and Peter; three grandchildren, Howard, Jamie and Kimberly; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; three sisters, Tilda Grief, Mable McCartney and Ethyl Dietrich; and a brother, Norm. Funeral services will be held at SKAALEN HOME, 400 N. Morris St., Stoughton, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec.12, 2006. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at SKAALEN HOME from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Following the service, family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon at the Skaalen Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Skaalen Home and Our Saviours Lutheran Church. A very special thank you to the staff of Skaalen Home and Hospice Care for the wonderful care given to Helen. Only one life will soon be past. Only whats done for Christ will last.
