Obituary
Hoover, Anna Elise MADISON - Anna Elise Hoover, age 99, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2007, at the HospiceCare Center, Fitchburg. She was born on April 10, 1908, in Superior, the daughter of Samson and Julia Anderson. Ann graduated from Superior Normal College and began her teaching career at age 17. She received her bachelor of education degree from UW-Whitewater in 1956. After several years of teaching in rural, one room school settings in Northern Wisconsin, Ann received a call to teach in Madison. She taught for 40 years in Madison, at various schools on the east side of town. Anns favorite and main teaching assignment was teaching fourth grade. She was a charter member of a chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, a local service sorority and was active in the chapter for more than 45 years. Ann was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the Tenney Park Circle at Bethel. She and her husband, Harry, owned and ran the Hoover Boat House on Lake Mendota. The site, located on Gorham Street, next to James Madison Park, has been designated a historical landmark. In early retirement years, Ann spent lots of time in continuing education classes. She loved her studies in areas of philosophy and art history. Ann also enjoyed reading, traveling, volunteering, civic club meetings and the arts. Her engaging personality had been a great example for friends and family members. Ann repeatedly reminded people "the learning must continue." This was certainly a motto she lived by example. Ann is survived by a brother, Lloyd Anderson of Superior; and three generations of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; a sister, Helga Anderson; and brothers, Oswald and Stanley Anderson. Funeral services will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2007, with the Rev. John Swanson presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church or HospiceCare Foundation, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Fitchburg, WI 53711.
