Smith, Norman F. Jr. MADISON/ DEFOREST - Norman F. Smith Jr., age 67, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at the HospiceCare Center, Fitchburg. He was born on March 23, 1940, at St. Claire Hospital, Monroe, to Norman F. and Lillian (Gruber) Smith Sr. Norman married Nancy Foust on Oct. 1, 1960. He served in the U.S. Army. Norman worked for the city of Madison Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 1990. He served for many years on the village of DeForest, Public Safety Committee. Norman was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, V.F.W. Truax-Longmire Post No. 8483, Wisconsin Professional Police Association, National Rifle Association and Whitetails Unlimited. His first love was deer hunting and he also enjoyed fishing. Norman studied Native American traditions and rituals and enjoyed making Native American crafts. Norman is survived by his wife, Nancy of DeForest; sons, Norman F. Smith III and Van Smith, both of Madison; grandson, Randy J. Dahl; his mother, Lillian (Maurice) Price of Madison; step-mother, Donna Smith of Madison; brothers, Carl (Cheri) Nelson, Terry (Debbie) Nelson and Ron (Mary) Price; and sisters, Leah (Russ) Emerson, JoAnn (Gary) Zurbachen, Tina Mulrain and Lynette (Bruce) Pauls; and mother-in-law, Ruth Foust of DeForest. He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Sr. and brother, Howard Nelson. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, with the Rev. Dr. Charles A. Wolfe presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by the Madison Veterans Firing Squad. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007.
