Howard M. Hougan

Hougan, Howard FARIBAULT, MINN. / MONONA - Howard Martin Hougan, age 90, formerly of Monona, died at his home in Faribault, Minn., on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 18, 1917, in Stoughton, the son of Henry and Anna Hougan. Howard was a retired Air Force Major, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He married Ruby M. Holzhueter on Jan. 1, 1946. They were blessed with four children, Victoria Anne, Karen Elizabeth, Kristi Marie and Paul Howard. His exemplary dedication to church, family and friends was truly a witness. In the words of one of his grandsons, "Grandpa was a family man, a patriot, a ball player, a writer, a craftsman and a man of God. He may be gone, but the lessons he has taught us in these roles will live on!" Howard is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruby; his four children, Victoria (Michael) Butterfield, Karen (Jim Bina) Madson, Kristi (Richard) Paterson, and Paul (Elizabeth) Hougan; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Don and Oris Hougan. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Ruth Sagen, Elda Rynning and Arnold Hougan; and a son-in-law, Paul Madson. Funeral services will be held at HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2670 Milwaukee St., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, with the Rev. Mark Bartels presiding. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by the Madison Veterans Firing Squad. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Bethany Lutheran College, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, or Faribault Area Hospice. "Blessed be his memory!"
