Garvey, Marian M. MADISON Marian M. Garvey, age 86, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at St. Marys Care Center. She was born on Oct. 16, 1921, to the late Grant and May Morse in Madison. Marian married Thomas J. Garvey on July 28, 1945, in Hollandale. Marian received her bachelors and masters degree from UW-Madison and began her career as a music teacher in the Rockford Public Schools. Marian was a life long educator whose career included teaching positions in Cuba City, Verona, Gratiot and Fort Atkinson, before finally retiring from the Madison Public Schools in 1983. Marian truly cared about each individual student and she attempted to differentiate and meet the needs of every student. The Thanksgiving feasts in her fifth grade classroom were something that students looked forward to each year. Marian was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She was an avid fan of the University of Wisconsin Band and Badgers athletics. She was also a proud supporter of the McFarland High School Band, where her son, Bill, has taught for the past 31 years. Upon retiring from the Madison schools, Marian spent countless hours playing piano accompaniments for McFarland students at the annual Solo-Ensemble Festival. Marian was an active charter member in ADK and an honorary educator sorority, as a member of the Madison Phi Chapter. In addition, Marian was a member of SAI, a professional music sorority. Her grandchildren, Andrew and Jessica, were the central focus of her life. Marian and her husband, Tom, attended almost every soccer, basketball, baseball and softball game that her grandchildren ever participated in. Marian is survived by her son, Bill (Michelle) Garvey; two grandchildren, Andrew and Jessica; a sister, Jessica Holmes; a sister-in-law, Catherine Setnicar; six nieces and nephews, Deborah (Craig) Holmes, Jon (Kate) Holmes, Druan Holmes, Mary Setnicar, Matt Setnicar and Monica (Fritz) Kaenzig; a grand-niece, Kari McKahan; and two grand-nephews, Jo Holmes and John Setnicar. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Tom; her parents; and two brothers-in-law, Andrew Holmes and Frank Setnicar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at CHRIST THE KING CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5306 Main St., McFarland, on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at 6 p.m., with Father D. Stephen Smith and Father Brian Wilk presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Hollandale at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008. Visitation will be at the church on Monday, from 3:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the family for a scholarship fund to be established in Marians name with the McFarland Education Foundation. The family would like to thank the St. Marys Care Center staff, Dr. Tim Lechmaier and his nurse, Teri Patwell, for their loving care and support given to Marian and her family. She will be sadly missed by all those whose lives she touched. And He will raise you up on eagles wings. Bear you on the breath of dawn. Make you to shine like the sun. And hold you the palm of His hand. Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Centers 5203 Monona Drive (608) 221-5420 www.gundersonfh.com
