Obituary
Jenks, Harriet L. (Lewis) MADISON The world lost one of John Waynes greatest fans on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008. Harriet Lorraine (Lewis) Jenks passed away at St. Marys Hospital of complications due to pneumonia, leaving this earth in the same hospital that she entered it, as she had often predicted that she would. She was born there, to John Bassett Lewis and Edna Mae Torgeson on April 28, 1923. Harriet attended and graduated from Madison West High School in 1941, and was active in basketball and golf. After graduation she went to work at the telephone company, until the breakout of the war, when she went to work for Madison Kipp, so that she could do her part for the war effort by making parts for munitions. It was there that she met and married B. Lee Jenks and together they founded Jenks Alignment Service. The couple had five children, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Over the years she had been active in local golfing, church and the Eastern Star. She was a founding member of the Starlight Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star on Madisons east side. She loved going to movies (particularly John Wayne movies) and loved playing cards with her family and friends. As much as she loved these things, she loved her family even more. When her two oldest grandchildren were born, she moved to Bend, Ore. to be able to be with them as they grew up, and when more grandchildren came, she returned to Madison, to get to be with them too. She was a great mother to her children and a loving grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always had their pictures with her. For the last few years, although her hearing and mobility were limited, her mind was clear and she enjoyed watching sports, news, and of course, old movies. She was fortunate enough to have lived at Karmenta on Milwaukee St., where she developed many friendships with many of the staff and residents. Her family will always be grateful for the wonderful people that befriended her there and for the fine care that she always received at their hands. When Harriet gave her friendship, she gave it wholeheartedly. To gain her friendship was to earn her love. Harriet is survived by her daughter, Louise Malinowski of Bend, Ore; three sons, Mark Jenks of Blue Mounds, Robert Jenks and David Jenks, both of Madison; eight grandchildren, Aaron and Adam Malinowski, Jason, Troy, Steven and Analicia Jenks, Justin Graham and Kendra Robinson; and six great-grandchildren, Logan, Alicia, Cheyenne, Jaden, Tiara and Maya. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Phillip, Douglas and John; and her oldest son, Keith. A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 11 a.m., on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10:45 a.m. until the time of the service. The family requests memorials be made to Karmenta Nursing Home, which is a non-profit facility.
