Frances M. Briggs (Marshall)

Briggs, Frances M. (Marshall) MADISON/ MONONA Frances M. (Marshall) Briggs, age 90, died on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008. She was born on July 6, 1918, in Madison, the daughter of Harry and Rose Showers. Frances was a lifelong resident of Madison and Monona. She went to East High School and received a belated diploma on her 80th birthday. Besides her family she enjoyed playing cards and going on bus trips for vacations or gambling. Frances got great joy out of making candy at Christmas for family and friends. She worked 35 years at Manchesters Department Store on the Capitol Square, until it closed in 1980. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Frances is survived by her daughter, Barbara (James) Hess; two grandchildren, Scott (Jodi) Serstad of Baraboo, and Susan (Allyson Wingate) Serstad of Madison; five great-grandsons, Aaron, Cody, Chad, Sean and Tony Serstad; two stepgrandchildren, Cassandra Van Worme and Thomas Van Schoyck; four stepchildren, Mildred (Darrell) Detloff of California, Judy (Lee) Swenson of Stoughton, Harriet (John) Pedley of Muscoda, and Harry (Debbie) Briggs Jr. of Monona; eight stepgrandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Donald Marshall on June 6, 1979; her second husband, Harry Briggs Sr. on Sept. 6, 1995; three brothers, Arthur, Charles and Winfred; five sisters, Anna Hanson, Hazel Lerwick, Pearl Madden, Evelyn Barnes and Ethel Shumway; and special friend, Olen Holm. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at noon on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, with the Rev. Bernt Tweit presiding. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, and also on Thursday, from 11 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
