SHORT, SR., JAMES RILEY
OREGON - James Riley Short, Sr., age 64, died on Saturday, September 11, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family after a 2 year battle with cancer. He was born on February 26, 1945 in Three Rivers, Michigan, the son of Glenn D. and Bernadette (Cannon) Short. James was united in marriage to Lorraine Macaluso on March 20, 1965 in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He joined the Air Force in 1963 after graduating from high school. James was a jet aircraft mechanic and served in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He had tours in Germany, New Mexico, Arizona, North Carolina, Indiana and Virginia during the 20 years he spent in the Air Force. While in the Air Force, he obtained his B.S. in Aviation. He then completed a Masters degree in Aviation Management two years after retiring and continued a career in commercial aviation and his most recent position was with Wisconsin Aviation. James was an excellent woodworker and enjoyed making furniture. He also enjoyed playing golf, especially with his sons, brother and son-in-law. James is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lorraine; a daughter, Kathrine (Edward) Dunphy; three sons, James R. Short, Jr.,Joseph (Sarah) Short and Airman First Class, Michael Short; a step-granddaughter, Natasha Dunphy two grandsons, Jason Dunphy and Benjamin James Short (due in December); his mother Bernadette Short; and two brothers, Glenn (Gloria) Short and Edward (Susan) Short. He was preceded in death by his father , half-sister, and Judy Campbell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at HOLY MOTHER OF CONSOLATION, 651 N. Main Street, Oregon at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 with Father Bill Connell presiding. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Family and friends may call from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, September 14, 2009 at the church and also on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, 1023 15th St. N.W., Suite 200, Washington D.C. 20005. A heartfelt thanks to James cousin, Mary Jane Taggart for her support during the final days.
