Runkel, Katherine Mary (Lukes)COTTAGE GROVE - Katherine Mary (Lukes) Runkel, age 80, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at HospiceCare in Fitchburg surrounded by her loving family. Katherine was born on Sept. 7, 1929, to Henry and Beatrice Lukes in Wisconsin. She attended East High School and graduated in 1947. Katherine married Dudley Runkel on June 1, 1950. She worked at Borman's Clothing Store on Monona Drive for many years. Katherine was an avid card player and had been in the same euchre club for 50 years. She also enjoyed playing bridge and 65 several times each week. Katherine was a loving daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother (Nana), great-grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law, cousin and friend. Katherine is survived by her children, Mark (Toni) Runkel of Cottage Grove, and Bob (Colleen) Runkel of Stoughton;daughter-in-law, Debbie Runkel of Sun Prairie; four grandchildren, Michelle Krantz, Benjamin (Christin) Runkel, Nathan "Nat" Runkel and Lisa Runkel; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Kyle Krantz; and dear friend, Edna Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Clay and Nellie Runkel; husband, Dudley; sons, Michael and Patrick; and aunt, Nora. Funeral services will be held at ST. PATRICK\'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 434 North Main Street, Cottage Grove, at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, with Msgr. Ray Kertz presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Katherine's memory to HospiceCare Inc., 5395 E.Cheryl Parkway, Madison, 53711, or St. Patrick's Church. The family would like to thank all the staff in Pod 6 for their tender care and support during this very difficult time. As she looks down upon us, we will always cherish her kind, caring nature and unconditional love and devotion. Flowers, teddy bears and dolls adorned her home and any visitors received a smile, a hug and an open, compassionate heart. We will hold the special gatherings most dear; Sheapshead, Sunday Dinners, Runkel Night Out, and holiday get-togethers. We love you Mom, Grandma, Nana, Great-Grandma and wish you everlasting peace.
