Niederkorn, JaniceMONONAJanice Niederkorn, age 86, of Monona, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, surrounded by her family, at HospiceCare in Fitchburg. Janice was born on April 23, 1923, in Stoughton, the daughter of Clarence and Ida (Seamonson) Quale. She was the youngest of five children growing up in Stoughton, living both on the farm and briefly in town during the Great Depression. She was part of a large, close-knit extended family with many friends. Together, they always made the best of life, despite the challenges of the Depression and World War II years. After graduating from Stoughton High School, she moved to Madison, where she later met her husband Donald Niederkorn. She and Donald, a Kenosha native, were wed on Aug.12, 1950. In 1957, they welcomed their first child Virginia (Wolter) and a son, David in 1960. They moved to Monona in 1961 and called it their home for life. Janice was a loving and devoted wife and mother, always providing a warm and welcoming home. Her farming roots may have contributed to her love of gardening. She and Don always grew flowers that decorated their home and vegetables that found their way into her wonderful dishes. She enjoyed cooking and took particular joy in serving favorite dishes to her kids and grandchildren, especially on those special days, such as birthdays and holidays. Her kids and grandkids could always count on Janice to have their favorite baked goods or desserts on any visit to her house. Every day of their lives, her husband, children and grandchildren knew how much they were loved and were always welcomed home. Janice will be dearly remembered and missed daily by her daughter, Virginia and her husband, Rich Wolter of Madison; her son, David and his wife, Julie (Rustad) Niederkorn of Cary, N.C.; her grandchildren, Matthew Tenuta of Madison , Cheryl (Zach) Zimmer of Waukesha, Carissa Niederkorn, Kendra Niederkorn and Raymond Niederkorn, each from Cary, N.C.; and her four step-granddaughters. And, it must be mentioned that her very special grand-dog, Misty will miss her grandma too. Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents; her sisters, Winifred Quale and Lucille Jenson; and her brothers, Ingvald Quale and Donald Quale; as well as a multitude of close cousins and friends.Janice passed away on Valentines Day and somehow that is very fitting. She demonstrated her love every day in so many quiet, yet meaningful ways. She had a wonderful sense of humor, particularly enjoying a good Norwegian joke, and cherished time with family and friends. She remembered birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions without fail. All family and visitors to her home were welcomed with wonderful baked goods and the coffee pot was always on. Somehow, Janice always had everyones favorites on hand. Even when she moved into an assisted living apartment this past year, she always made sure to have candy and cookies on hand for any visitors or staff members who would drop in. She will be missed.
