Edward Samuel Iverson

Iverson, Edward SamuelMONONA-Edward Samuel Iverson, age 88, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010, at his home in Monona. He was born on Nov. 15, 1921, the son of John and Minnie (Johnson) Iverson on a farm near Gays Mills. Edward attended school in Soldiers Grove and graduated from high school in 1939. He attended Madison Business College for two years and worked for various firms in Madison as an accountant. In 1950 Ed entered the bowling business with his father and brothers. Their first bowling lane was known as Bowl-A-Vard, on East Washington Avenue. On Nov. 23, 1956, he married Helen (Sproul/Docter) and she brought two children into the marriage, Carolyn and William. In 1960 Ed, his dad, and his brothers opened a second bowling lane called Burr Oaks Bowl, on Park Street. In 1970 the family bought a bowling center in Viroqua, called Bowl-A-Way Lanes. Ed retired from the bowling business in 1990, but not before he was enshrined in the Madison Bowling Hall of Fame in 1978. He was an avid bowler and a charter member of the American Bowling Congress and made many ABC tournaments and BPAA conventions. Edward will be remembered as a kind person and one who gave to many charities. To name a few, the Madison Parks Commission (for trees at Yahara Golf course as he was an avid golfer), East Side Business Association, Boys Clubs of America, Elks Club, Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove, and the Northeast Optimist Club where he was a member for 35 years and served as president for one year. Edward is survived by his brother, Don Iverson of Platteville; two sisters, Carolyn Benson of Soldiers Grove, and Janice (Bill) Kobach of Topeka, Kan.; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Iverson of Soldiers Grove, and Diane Iverson of Madison; step-son, Bill (Cailin) Docter of Madison; step-daughter, Carrie (Joe) Browne of Broken Arrow, Okla.; four grandchildren, Sam and Christian Docter, Heather Browne, and Heidi (Tim) Epple; two great-grandchildren; 13 nieces and nephews; numerous relatives and friends; and a very special friend, Charlotte Shillinglaw of McFarland. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Roger and David; his wife, Helen; and a brother-in-law, Larry Benson. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010, with the Rev. Jeff VandenHeuvel presiding. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. A special thanks to the three gals who took very good care of him at his house in the later years, Sandra, Barb, and Ellie.
