Evans, John "Jack" HudsonMADISON - John "Jack" Hudson Evans, age 91, died peacefully on Friday, May 21, 2010 at HospiceCare. He was born on Feb. 3, 1919, to William and Tess Evans, in Elkhorn. John moved to Madison in 1927 and attended Lowell School and East High School, class of 1936. He began working at Ray-O-Vac in 1937 and then entered the military in 1942 as a Medical Technician in a surgical unit, often helping burn victims recover. After his service ended, he returned to Ray-O-Vac, working there for nearly 45 years, retiring in 1982. While working at Ray-O-Vac, he met Lillian Cassidy, who married him in 1953. They enjoyed 47 years of love and laughter until her death in June of 2000. He is survived by his sons, Jim and Kerry; daughter-in-law, Lora; nephew, Jerry Marberry, who was raised by John; seven grandchildren, Heather (John Hillestad), Jeremy, KJ, Erin, Erica, John and Chloe;two great-granddaughters, Cassidy and Sophie; and niece, Sheri (Brian Piper). John's life was enriched by extended family members, Theresa Aberle, Karen Rude-Evans, Nick Tiedeman, Irene Skattum, Rod and Lorraine Helmke, Lee Hinton, Kate Hunter, Robert and Jean Burke, Pat Cassidy and many other dear family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian; sister, Velnia; and brother, Robert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Rd., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, with Father Kent Schmitt presiding. Visitation will be at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., with Rosary at 6 p.m., on Monday, May 24, 2010. Memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare,5395 E. Cheryl Pkwy, Fitchburg, 53711. The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Harnish for his compassionate and patient care for Jack. We would also like to thank Jeff Shields and his staff at Chamomile Assisted Living, especially Barb, April, Christine, Elena, Evelyn, Jamie, Jennifer, and Tracey for their dedication. Finally, the family would like to thank HospiceCare for their commitment to helping families at end of life care. Dad will be fondly remembered for his love of family, food, conversation and his commitment to positive living. He saw the possibilities in every day and the good in every person.
