Obituary

Uselman, Melvin F. "Mel" MADISON-Melvin F. "Mel" Uselman, age 90, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born on Aug. 24, 1919, in Milladore, the son of Henry and Rose (Acker) Uselman. Mel served in the U. S. Army during World War II, in the South Pacific, participating in four invasions. He married Catherine Buckles on Nov. 9, 1946, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Madison. She preceded him in death on Aug. 26, 1984. Mel later met and married Martha Branley on Aug. 7, 1987, at St. James Catholic Church in Madison. He owned and operated his own company, Melvin F. Uselman Builders for more than 30 years. Mel was a longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Elks Club and East Side Business Mens Association. He enjoyed playing cards, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mel is survived by his wife, Martha; four daughters, Ruth Dorn of San Diego, Calif., Kathy (Ronald) Anderson of Tempe, Ariz., Julie (Rob) Wold of Hartland, and Sharon Uselman of Chicago, Ill.; five stepchildren, David Branley of Madison, Sharon (Bob) Jorgensen of Oregon, Susan (Jack) Topleski of Henderson, Nev., John (Kathy) Branley of Poynette, and Lynn (Terry) Cook of Morrow Bay, Calif..; four grandchildren, Chris and Geoff Wold, and Lydia and Ben Anderson; seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, George (Mary Jean) Uselman; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Kay; son, Scott Uselman; six brothers; a sister; and grandson, Joseph Anderson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2010, with Father John Meinholz presiding. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2010, and at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc. or Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
