Edward C. Steffens

Middleton - Edward C. Steffens, age 86, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2010 at HospiceCare. He was born on April 12, 1924 in Platteville, WI. the son of Edward and Mary Rose (Swift) Steffens. After graduating high school, Ed attended Platteville School of Mines. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during WWII as a Seaman 1st Class. Ed married Ruth M. Burr on June 8, 1948 in Lancaster, WI. and moved to Middleton in 1949. He was a licensed plumber and employed with the State of WI. until his retirement in 1986. Ed belonged to St. Bernards Catholic Church, where he served as a usher and was a member of the Knights of Columbus #4549, the American Legion Post #275 and a lifetime member of the Plumbers Union. Survivors include his daughters, Suzanne (Thomas) Coit, Janelle (Steve) Whitney, and Patricia (Jerome) Bernal; four grandchildren, Jeff Coit, Alison Whitney-Penner, Ashley Whitney and Brieana Bernal; his great-daughter, Samantha Coit; a longtime companion, Vi McNulty and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by Ruth, his wife, in 1989; and three sisters Mary O'Brien, Mabel Tesmer and Frances Guler . A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST BERNARD'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2010 with Monsignor Douglas Dushack presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 4 pm until 7pm on Wednesday August 25, 2010 at the GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton and also on Thursday from 10 am until the time of service at the church.
