COTTAGE GROVE - Dr. Brian Pochel, age 43, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at HospiceCare, after living 5-1/2 years with pancreatic cancer. He was born on Nov. 23, 1967, in Portsmouth,Va., the son of Dennis Pochel and Kaitlyn Laurie. Brian married Sheryl Niendorf, on Aug. 7, 1993, at Grace Episcopal Church in Madison. He graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa in October of 1998, as a Doctor of Chiropractic. Brian and Sheryl were the founders of Cottage Chiropractic in 2000 where he was awarded Best Doctor of Cottage Grove for four years, and also received the Nels Bakke Award for best new chiropractor in the state in 2004. He was very active in the Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce where he served two terms as president and was a member of the Lions Club. Brian professionally raced BMX bikes and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved camping and canoeing with his family, one of his favorites destinations was the Boundary Waters. Brian is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Sheryl; four children, Hannah, Abbie, Tucker and Genevieve; mother, Kaitlyn Laurie; father and step-mother, Dennis and Dawn Pochel; a sister, Dawn (Shawn) Padgett; a brother, Sgt. Shaun Pochel, U.S. Army; grandmother, Phyllis Deitering; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ron and Ruth Niendorf; brother-in-law, Chris (Anne) Niendorf; sister-in-law, Maria (Ryan) Helgeson; nieces, Kylie and Victoria Padgett, Emma Pochel; and nephew, Patrick Pochel; and many friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his faithful cat, Fred. Funeral services will be held at NEW LIFE CHURCH, 7564 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011. One of Brian’s last wishes was to have a pig roast with all of his family and friends. His wish will be honored following the service. Visitation will be held at the church from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

I'm in shock to hear of Brian's passing. I haven't seen or spoken to Brian in over a decade. I grew up racing BMX from Nebraska and can remember meeting Brian at the ABA BMX camp in Michigan back in the early 90's. He was a great guy who helped out anyone that wanted advice or asked for help. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. He was a class act. Always professional, always had a smile on his face, and would do anything to help anyone. You will be missed my friend. God speed to you!
