Catherine I. 'Kitty' Stein

Stein, Catherine I. “Kitty” EAU CLAIRE/ MADISON- Catherine I. “Kitty” Stein, age 88, passed away on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011. She was born on Feb. 10, 1923 in Oakfield, the daughter of Frederick and Emma Mae (Smith) Schmidt. Kitty married Franklin Phelps on Nov. 12, 1939, in Loyal and he preceded her in death. She married Nicholos Stein on Dec. 25, 1948, in Madison. Kitty worked as a staff clerk for Wisconsin Bell Telephone Co. for many years. She was a member of Telephone Co. Pioneers, American Business Women’s Association and the Eastside Businessman Association. Kitty earned a distinguished community service award by the Eastmorland Community Association Board of Directors. She enjoyed music and playing clarinet and piano. Kitty is survived by her children, Jack Phelps, Barbara (Bill Titley) Stein, Jerri Ann (John) Biester, Terri (Gordon) Glass, Bryan (Megge) Stein and Penny (Todd) Stephens; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers, Lester Schmidt and Fred Schmidt; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Joanne Tuinstra; and husbands, Franklin Phelps and Nicholos Stein. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Foundation in Eau Claire. A special thank you to Grace Edgewood Assisted Living, Altoona, the Syverson Lutheran Home and Kitty’s daughter Penny and son-in-law Todd for their wonderful care of our mom.
