Dan G. Pirkl

DEERFIELD- Dan G. Pirkl, age 79, of Deerfield, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born on Feb. 18, 1932, in Sun Prairie, the son of Gust and Mary (O’Connor) Pirkl. Dan married Sarah Edgerton on June 4, 1960, at St. Dennis Catholic Church. He served in the Korean War in the US Army. Dan drove truck for Consolidated Freightways and retired in 1994. Dan also farmed all of his life and enjoyed spending time with his horses. He drove his horses on wagon train rides and was in the Horse Pullers Hall of Fame. Dan loved to spend time with his grandsons, Nicholas and Nathan. Grandpa and Nicholas (Grandpa’s boy) loved to go on tractor rides and drive the skidsteer. Dan also enjoyed going for coffee and playing cards with his friends at Nora’s. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sarah; daughter, Lynda (Jeremy) Hanold; grandsons, Nicholas and Nathan; brother, Richard (Marian); sister, Kathleen Margraf; sisters-in-law, Geri Huemmer, Dolores Doyle and Deborah (Carl) Kortte; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Dan was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bob, Jack and Jim; and sisters, Mary and Jean. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC CHURCH, 434 N. Main Street, Cottage Grove, at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2011, with Father John Sasse presiding. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2011. A rosary will be prayed at 7 pm. The visitation will continue at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. The family would like to express a special thank you to Peggy Weber, Dean Oncology and Dr. Musa.
