Obituary
Middleton – Steve Hurd, age 60, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend passed away into the Lord’s arms surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, December 8th after a long heroic battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed, but the light of his life will continue to be bright in the hearts of his family and friends who cherished him beyond words. Steve was born on Aug 10, 1951, the son of Richard and Mavis Hurd. He graduated from Middleton High School in 1971 and soon thereafter went to work for Sub-Zero Freezer Co. where he worked for 37 years before retiring in January. Steve was an avid supporter of worker’s rights, serving numerous years as a union steward and on several negotiation committees. On April 11, 1981, he married the love of his life, Susan Schmidt and they had two children, Cody and Erik, the joy of his life. Steve had several passions, he was an avid racing fan, professional photographer, hockey player, but his absolute favorite passion was coaching. Steve had a personality and special talent that brought out the best in everyone. He was a caring father-figure with a soft voice, gentle heart and quick wit. He started coaching Middleton Youth Hockey in 1977 and continued coaching his 2 boys throughout their youth career with Southwest Eagles in Verona. He loved attending the boys sporting events and was a true cheerleader in the stands. He also served a three year term on the Middleton School Board, advocating the importance for high school sports, a member of the Middleton High School Booster Club and recently volunteered at the high school up to the last days of his death. Steve is survived by his wife, Sue; sons, Cody and Erik; mother, Mavis Hurd Fieber; sister, Nancy (Bob) Schumacher, brothers; Mark (Barb), Kevin, Dan (Bernadette) Hurd; stepbrothers; Phil (Gail), Paul (Tammy), Chris (Jan) Fieber; mother-n-law, Ruby Ann Schmidt; sister in-laws Nancy (Richard) Bartlett, Jane (Phil) Schmidt; brother in-laws Roger (Nancy), Bill (Nancy), Jim (Brenda) Schmidt and many nieces, nephews and cousins and special friends at Sub Zero who he loved and adored. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; step-father, Jerome Fieber and father-in-law, Ervin Schmidt. Steve, my love, my life, best husband and father in the world, we didn’t want you to suffer any longer. So, with tears in our eyes, we told you it was all right to go. Now at rest, Gold holds you in the palm of his hand and we, your family, hold you in our hearts forever. A memorial service will be held at the Middleton Performing Arts Center, Middleton High School, 2100 Bristol St., Middleton at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec 28, 2011, with a time to greet the family following the service.
