Obituary

MADISON-Eric John Norman, age 69, of Madison, passed quietly from this life at Agrace HospiceCare on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. He was born on Nov. 12, 1942, in Detroit, Mich. to LaLander and Garnet (Johnston) Norman. He attended Wabash College and Butler University before receiving his master’s degree in computer science from the UW-Madison. Eric worked at UW's Academic Computing Center (later Division of Information Technology) for more than 41 years until his retirement in 2008. During those years Eric made significant contributions to academic computing. His expertise was pivotal in the development of the first email system for students and faculty, long before the days of the internet made email commonplace. In the years directly preceding his retirement, Eric became a recognized expert in the emerging fields of digital security and data encryption at UW-Madison and peer institutions across the country. After retirement Eric continued reviewing and commenting on research papers in mathematics and digital security. Eric's lifelong passion for learning, his dedication to the university, and his contributions to mathematics and computer science were a driving force throughout his life. His four year struggle with lung cancer did not affect his brilliant mind nor keep him from enjoying his other interests: flying, chess, and the board game GO. He was an avid fan of the UW Women's Volleyball team, and never missed a home game in 20 years. He belonged to the Madison Curling Club and the Mad Town Talls. His sharp wit never deserted him and his friends will miss it (which they often did anyway when they couldn't follow it)! Eric is survived by his father, LaLander, of Homosassa, Fla; sisters, Martha (James) Neely of Jamestown, Tenn., Shirley Cook and Carol Wellborn, both of Homosassa, Fla. Eric is also survived by eight nieces and nephews; his dearest friends, Cheri (Harper) Larson, Steve and Judi, and Peter and Jan, were close to Eric throughout his illness and also saw him through his last days. Eric's mother, Garnet, and a brother-in-law, Rick Cook died before him. The enigma that was Eric Norman will be sorely missed by those who knew him best. A celebration of his life will be held at the VINTAGE BREWING COMPANY (www.vintagebrewingcompany.com), 674 S. Whitney Way, Madison from 4 p.m. until 8p.m. on Thursday, Jan 12, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eric's two favorite charities: The Dane County Humane Society and Rawhide Boys Club. ...the sureness of the soul, Seems to owe naught to any single cord, But strictly held by none, is loosely bound By countless silken ties of love and thought To every thing on earth the compass round... We own the Hyde Store and knew Eric for years. We kept him plowed out in the winter and his grass mowed in the summer. LeRoy played horseshoes with Eric for years until Eric was unable to play anymore. He will be missed by his neighbors in Hyde. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, who he talked about but we never met.
