Obituary
MADISON – Glenn John Phippen, Age 69, passed away Friday, February 17th, 2012 at home, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born in Madison on October 13, 1942 to Glenn L. Phippen and Henrietta (Adler) Phippen, and married his high school sweetheart Gail Smock on January 13, 1962. Glenn grew up on the West side of Madison where his father had a service station, that was the start of his lifelong love of cars. He enrolled at MATC body school, working at his trade for several years until, Glenn and his father became partners in Madison Bumper Exchange. Glenn was fortunate to be able to retire at the age of 55, allowing him the opportunity to follow his hobby of building street rods. He was a true craftsman and entered many car shows where he made many lifelong friends. Glenn and Gail together raised three wonderful children, Tracy Hall, Bill Phippen, both of Madison, and Jim (Jill) Phippen of Eau Claire. They were also blessed to have six beautiful grandchildren, Travis (Lauren) Ott of Appleton, Miles and Logan Hall of Madison, and Austin, Alyssa and Adam Phippen of Eau Claire. Glenn’s family surrounded him with love and many happy memories, many of them made very special because of Glenn’s sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all of his family, friends, breakfast bunch, and fellow car enthusiasts. Glenn is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, his loving sister Donna Shakstad, nieces, Karen, Linda and Becky, his dear mother-in-law Lillian Smock along with numerous other relatives and friends. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law James Shakstad and father-in-law William Smock. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison at 7:00pm on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012 with Chaplain Timothy Jones of Agrace HospiceCare officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4:00pm until the time of service on Wednesday. Dear Gail & family,
We're so sorry for Glen's passing. He's at peace now & free from all pain. We know this is terribly difficult to lose a loved one. He was a great guy & we'll always remember the fun times we had through the years.

We will always remember Glen's generous spirit and his great sense of humor. Glen was truly one of the nicest men we've ever met. We will look back at the trip to Branson, the trip to Indiana and the trips to St. Paul as some of the best times in our lives. We feel so lucky to have had Glen as a friend and we feel so robbed that our friend was taken much too soon.

I am so sorry to hear about Glenn. I am in Louisiana on vacation. I really appreciated the help he gave me after I put Ron in Assisted Living and the guys all came over to help clean out my garage and send buyers to me for the many parts laying around.

I am so sorry to hear of Glenn's passing and want to extend condolences to you and the family. Glenn and I share a love for '40 Ford's and whenever I have been in Madison, my brother Jim and I have tried to come out and check on the progress of the convertible. I am deeply saddened that my friend has departed. Fran and my prayers and thoughts are with you.
