Obituary

MADISON-Richard W. “Dick” Mackie, age 79, died on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at home. Dick was born on March 6, 1933, in Wauwatosa, the son of Arvo and Lois Mackie. He was the middle son of three boys, raised in Whitewater. During high school, he met his sweetheart Katheryn “Kay” (Cummings). They were married in 1956. Initially, they began their marriage in Whitewater, moved to Janesville and eventually onto Madison in 1965. Along the way they raised four children. Dick worked his entire career for Wisconsin Bell, retiring in 1991 after 38 years of service. As an active member of Monona United Methodist Church, he served on various committees and as Scout Master for the Boy Scouts for more than 15 years. He enjoyed woodworking and used his talents as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Dick had a passion for boats and loved to restore old boats to their former beauty. He especially enjoyed being outdoors in nature. Together, Dick and Kay enjoyed God’s natural world and had many outings canoeing, hiking, boating, fishing, and traveling to various countries on mission trips. He loved his time at the cottage and loved sharing it with his family and friends. Dick’s grandchildren were a great source of joy and his love of nature, loons and fishing will carry on in them. He is survived by his wife, Kay; children, Sandra (Tony) Lettunich, Jeffrey (Sandy) Mackie, Diane (Frank) Walker, and Nancy (Tom) Engle; grandchildren, Shayne Mackie, Matthew Lettunich, Allyse Engle, Katheryn Lettunich, Samuel Gehrke, Zachary Engle, Oliver Gehrke, Jenelle Mackie, Jessica Engle, Olivia Gehrke, Malorie Mackie, and Jacob Mackie; and his brother, William Mackie. Memorials may be made to Monona United Methodist Church, Habitat of Humanity or Agrace HospiceCare. The family would like to thank the many friends and neighbors for their constant support and prayers through Dick’s illness with cancer and the staff at Agrace HospiceCare for the professional, loving care he received.
