Obituary

WAUNAKEE-Lewis A. “Lew” Owens, age 91, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2013. He was born on June 13, 1921, in Berkeley, Va., the son of Louis W. and Stella B. (Snell) Owens. Lew was raised in Roper, N.C. on the family homestead. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Lewis met Betty J. Pfeil of Portage, in Washington D.C. while he was stationed there. He and Betty were married on June 2, 1944, at the Fort Meyers Chapel in Virginia. After World War II, they moved to Waunakee. Lew worked at Pyramid Motors in Madison and he owned and operated several Standard Oil stations in Madison. He later opened a full service auto repair shop with John Dubois called, Owens and Dubois. Lewis was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed waterskiing with friends and family. Lew was a member of the Waunakee Gun Club where he enjoyed shooting sporting clays. He also competed in the Badger State Games, shooting sporting clays, winning numerous awards. Lewis had a huge love of quail hunting, especially in Kansas with his family and relatives. He also enjoyed cooking, old country music, and was an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan. Lewis is survived by his children, Randall (Audrey) Owens, Dennis “Denny” Owens, Mark (Tammy Henrichs) Owens, and LuAnne (Robert) Kau; grandchildren, Heather, Daniel, Robert, and David; niece, Betty Lee Massey; nephew, Jim (Lannette) Cutrell, Marvin (Mary) Cutrell, and Boyce Van Cutrell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 2000; sisters, Stella Mann and Mary Christine Barnhill. Funeral services will be held at HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2670 Milwaukee St., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013. Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2013. A special thank you to Waunakee Senior Center, especially Candice, Sue, Jerry, Vince, and Dan; Scott and his mother, Bernice for their help and kindness; to the very kind and caring doctors, nurses and staff at St. Mary’s Dialysis Center; the Cutrell family; and John and Sandy Dubois for their kindness and support throughout the years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and we will miss him dearly, but are comforted to know that he is now with the love of his life. Always sad to see on of the "Greatest Generation" pass, especially having known him. Lew was a nice gentleman the few times I've talked with him. Surely appreciate his service to His country. Remember, Your loss, IS, his gain. My condolences to the family.
