Obituary

On Friday May 17th, our mom, Margaret “Maggie” Pauline Woerpel (nee Rood), joined her husband, Arthur C. Woerpel, in heaven, now together in their final home. Mom was born on March 31, 1923 to Peter O. and Margaret R. Rood. Her sisters, Arlene Mickelson and Olive Rood, and brother, Marvin Rood, predeceased her. She raised five children, Julie A. Woerpel, Linda (Charles) Caprariello, Susan (Dik, deceased) Duval, Karen (Robert) Jones, Peter (Deb) Woerpel. Mom’s spirit was lifted whenever she saw or talked about her grandchildren, Cassie, Maggie (Chris), Greg (Bess), Kate (Tony), Steven (Maegan), Jolie, Wendy, Alex, Andrew (Jamie), and Peter (Katie). Mom’s family roots were always a source of pride to her and she loved her nieces, nephews and extended family dearly. Her entire demeanor changed when she was with her two great grand-daughters, Stella Gómez-Phillips and Adalyn Ask. She loved them to the bottom of her heart; they were her greatest joy these past months. Mom just celebrated her 90th birthday at Heritage Monona with family, friends and a harmonious reunion with the Sweet Adelines Quartet Charisma. Mom sang with the Sweet Adelines in the early 1950’s, which made their appearance very “sweet” indeed. Mom and Dad enjoyed the winter months in Lakeland, Florida in the ‘80s and ‘90s; it was there mom held the honor of High Priestess of the Eastern Star. Mom was active with the Madison Chapter of The Sons & Daughters of Norway. She was a part of their drill team and practiced religiously with them. Her Norwegian sense of humor was often sparked by her cousin Josephine, who we are certain had something to do with Mom’s passing on Syttende Mai. We know that mom is no longer in pain, and for that we are extremely grateful. We are sure a multitude of friends and family welcomed her with smiles and open arms. We know that she will once again be laughing and playing cards with her “sorority” friends, the “TKB” (Tappa Kegga Beer), and may even attempt bowling again, which is how she met dad many years ago. Please join us for a Celebration of Mom’s Life at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, with the Rev. Afi Dobbins of the Marshall United Methodist Church. Private burial will follow at a later date. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. Our family gratefully thanks and commends all of the staff at Heritage Monona and Agrace Hospice for the love, generosity, support and care they have given to Maggie and her entire family. She died knowing that you all loved her and cared for her. She felt that every day!
