Gladys Irene Evelyn (Oen) Solberg

MADISON- Gladys Irene Evelyn (Oen) Solberg, previously of Madison, beloved wife of the late Carl Solberg, passed away on December 22, 2013 at the age of 95. She was born on Aug. 13, 1918 on a farm in De Forest, the youngest daughter of Andrew and Tina Oen, Norwegian-American farmers. Gladys grew up on the farm, in her loving family with two sisters and four brothers. She spent long hours playing in the flower gardens of the farm which her grandfather homesteaded. As a result, Gladys developed a strong internal will and a kind, benevolent sweetness which made her naturally comfortable with her traditional role in the family, being a dedicated and wonderful mother, wife, and grandmother, and which also fuelled her loving and kind-hearted demeanour which she exuded to all throughout her lifetime. Gladys’ first priority was being a proud mother and homemaker. She was a very good cook, and an accomplished seamstress. Gladys also worked as an operator in the State Capital and as a part-time care giver. She was a pious and religious woman with high moral standards, devoted to God and the sanctuary of Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison. All through her life Gladys was a quiet Matriarch. Her easy and ever present smile and kindness emanating deep in her soul through times of joy and adversity is what made Gladys so special. Her light still shines as brightly today and will be ever-present in the hearts and minds of her family, relatives and friends who were blessed to know this Angel. Gladys was the loving mother of Ronald and Richard (Mary), and the beloved grandmother of Lauren, Eric, and Jeffrey Solberg. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, with Pastor Swanson presiding.
