Obituary
Mohr, Clara M. (Grindstad)
MADISON-Clara M. (Grindstad) Mohr, age 95, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on Dec. 6, 1918, in the city of Souris, Divide County, N.D., to Ole C. Grindstad and Mary (Skarphol) Grindstad, both from Norway. At the age of 3, Clara moved to Mt. Horeb with her family. In 1929, they moved from Mt. Horeb to Madison, where she attended Dudgeon Grade School, West High School, Class of 1937, and MATC. Clara taught Red Cross First Aid during WWII and worked at the Madison Business Association, managing the tourist information booth located on Wisconsin Ave., between Manchester’s and the old City Hall. She supervised UW athletes employed on a trade area survey in the early 40s, when the athletes lived in the Madison Fire Stations. Clara was later employed by the Division General Superintendent of the Borden Company. She also recruited her girlfriends for USO dances and occasions held at the YMCA on West Washington Ave., for soldiers stationed at Truax Field. It was during these times that she met her future life-mate, Glen, while he was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corp. Clara was married on January 22, 1944, to Glen H. Mohr of Cambria, Wis. She is survived by two sons, Dennis J. (Carole) Mohr of Fitchburg and Gary D. (Joyce) Mohr of Chetek; three grandchildren, David B. (Sarah) Mohr of Long Lake, Minn., Holly S. (Jamie) Holly of St. Marie’s, Idaho and Benjamin L. Mohr of Portland, Ore.; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Ryan and Sidney and J.J.; one brother, Donald A. Grindstad of Phoenix, Ariz.; nieces and nephews, especially the Stocktons, Sue, Bob, Judy and their families; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen in 1990; a 2-month-old infant daughter, Karen Lee, in 1950; her parents; her brother, Melvin Grindstad; and sisters, Alice Grindstad and Dorothy Stockton. Clara was very proud of and interested in her American-Norwegian heritage. She attended Norwegian classes throughout the years and made four trips to Norway, visiting relatives and acquiring many memories and genealogical facts. She enjoyed her friends with whom she had many good memories and travels. Clara had memberships in Bethel Lutheran Church’s XYZ (Xtra Years of Zest), BLCW, Bethel Senior Citizens, NAWCCA (Nat’l. Assoc. of Watch & Clock Collectors), Vesterheim’s and Sons of Norway. In 1984, she retired after 17 years as a secretary from the Dept. of Employee Trust Funds. A Celebration of Clara’s Life will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL HOME, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, at 11:30 a.m., on Friday, June 27, 2014, with Pastor Curtis Everson presiding. Burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the celebration on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Media Ministry, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, Wis. 53703 or Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Madison, Wis. 53711. The family wishes to thank Heritage Manor in Monona, Four Winds Care Center, St. Mary’s ER and 3 Southwest, and Agrace HospiceCare. I am so sorry for your loss. Clara was a wonderful lady. I worked with her at the Department of Employee Trust Funds and have many fond memories of Clara. She was so enjoyable and always professional. She knew how to handle everything and everyone in the office and kept us organized and moving forward. But most importantly, she was a sweet and kind person. She will be missed.

Clara was a lovely lady; she sat at my mom's table in the community dining room; we spoke a little Norwegian together, and she told me of her travels back to Norway. MY most sincere sympathy to her sons & family.

My condolences to the Mohr family. Clara was one of my favorite classmates when taking Conversational Norwegian a couple of time. We shared the love of our Norwegian Heritage and many stories about our trips to Norway and reconnecting with our relatives. If she ever serves you microwave rommegrot...........that's the recipe I gave her. She was a delight!!

I couldn't even begin to share "a" favorite memory of Clara. Being a former neighbor, I have years of favorite memories of this special woman. I loved both her and Glen. I'm so sorry I didn't know she was so sick. I planned to visit her soon FOR SURE. Famous last words. I'm very sorry I didn't get a chance to see her and give her a hug. My sympathies to all of the Mohr family. I hope to see you on Friday. Jean

My sympathy to your families. May you cherish the memories of the great times you shared with Clara. I enjoyed working with Clara for a number of years at the Department of Employee Trust Funds. She was always a helpful and sociable person. I laughed when I read that she recruited her girlfriends for USO dances and occasions at the YMCA. Vicki
