Obituary

Hohlstein, Marvin Warren “Marv” MADISON– Marvin “Marv” Warren Hohlstein, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. A lifetime resident of Madison’s east side, Marv was born on Aug. 18, 1936, to Arthur and Viola (Kempfer) Hohlstein. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1956, where he was an All-City Football player and known to be “the fastest guy at East.” Marv married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Barbara Oasen, on Oct. 12, 1957. After serving in the U.S. Army, Marv began his career with Strauss Printing Company in Madison. In his over 40 years of service, he held several roles and was most proud of his time as a foreman. Marv always had a project – he was quite the handyman! Side-by-side Marv and Barb renovated rental properties on Madison’s east side, and opened a popcorn stand in New Glarus called “The Hut.” Marv and Barb also loved to travel with friends and family, and later even got into camping. He was especially proud of his children and grandchildren and found happiness being surrounded by those he loved. Later in life, Marv enjoyed spending time with his dog, Sam, and spent many fun-filled hours making “donations” to the Ho-Chunk Nation. Marv leaves his daughter, Cathy Hilsenhoff; son, Chris (Lisa) Hohlstein; granddaughters, Nikki and Erin Hilsenhoff; sisters-in-law, Pat Hohlstein, Donna Anderson and Louise Oasen; as well as several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Sam. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; his parents, Arthur and Viola; brothers, Carl, Arthur (Helen) and Steve Hohlstein; brothers-in-law, Robert (Beatrice) Oasen, John Oasen, and Elwood “Andy” Anderson. Even in this time of sadness, our family is at peace knowing that Marv will be reunited with his soulmate, Barb. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park with full military honors. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society, Agrace HospiceCare or a charity close to your heart. Additionally, the family would like to recognize the loving care that Marv received from the teams at Meadowmere Assisted Living and Agrace Hospice Care. Cathy, Dan and I were so sorry to hear that your dad had died. I can still hear his laugh when I remember the good times we had at card club. He always loved a good joke! Not many of the old gang left as we are all growing older. Our thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time. Barb and Dan ONeill
