My name is John Podebradsky and I would like to share some memories of Barney at deer camp. Besides my father , Everett Podebradsky, my favorite hunting mentor was Barney Prescott . I was about 9 or 10 years old when I began to tag along with dad and Barney. Pheasants at Brooklyn hunting grounds , geese at horicon marsh , but the best was at the " Shack " way up north in Forest co. hunting grouse and deer. One october day in particular, about 1968 I was 12 or 13 years old ,the first year I could actually hunt . I flushed a grouse and watched where it landed and tried to flush it again , several times . Realizing I had best get back to camp I retraced my route to the shack , only to a big swamp blocking my retreat . Nothing looked familiar , this kid was lost ! Being the young woodsman I was , I panicked . Started hollering , fired a shot in the air and hollered some more. Before long , someone answered.the brush was breaking and when my rescuer got close , I was one relieved and thankful boy when Barney popped out , offered me a reeses' peanut butter cup , reassured me any one could get turned around out here . But I could tell by the way Barney was sweating and out of breath ,that he had been very concerned and then relieved that I was just lost and not injured . Through all the years at deer camp , Barney was always the first one up in the mornings , had coffee made, rolls out and a weather report. Barneys' enthusiasm was contagious . He was very relaxed up there , when he turned out the old coleman lantern , it was said that Barney could be asleep before the last sputtering light faded out . A classier and more respectful man I have never met . Happy Hunting Barney From all your friends from the "Shack"
