COTTAGE GROVE/PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.-Sharon L. "Sherri" Bryan Jakel, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, surrounded by her family. She was born on April 28, 1937, in Madison, the daughter of Milton and Maxine Helgesen. She married Walter Bryan and they were married for 39 years. He preceded her in death in September of 1996. Sherri later married Tom Jakel on Jan. 2, 1998. She worked at MG&E and Wisconsin Power and Light. Before getting married, Sherri attended nursing school where she realized her love for nurturing and caring, especially for her loved ones. She enjoyed painting, decorating, sewing, and organizing family vacations all over the United States. Sherri loved their home in Port Charlotte, Fla., where she and Tom spent their winters. She was an example of her strong faith. Sherri is survived by her husband, Tom; children, David (Darci) Bryan and Tari (Kurt) Emerson; grandchildren, Amber (Casey) Hendrickson, Josh Bryan, Chelci Bryan and Avery and Breanna Emerson; step children, Beth (Pete) Zaher, Brian (Kathy) Jakel, Amy (Rick) Lewin and Brad (Carri) Jakel; step grandchildren, Dane Zaher, Megan and Aaron Jakel, Eric (Marie) Lewin, Sarah (Josh) Druding, Noah, Isaiah, Madeline and Ian Jakel; siblings, Marv Helgesen, Lynn (Ken) Schoeninger, Beth (Dean) Colello; sister-in-law, Melissa Helgesen; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Mel Helgesen and Dave Helgesen. Funeral services will be held at MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5202 Cottage Grove Rd., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, with the Rev. Jeff Vanden Heuvel presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Burial at Highland Memory Gardens will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society or to Messiah Lutheran Church. A special thank you to the staff at UW Hospital for all of their care and support.
