Obituary
OREGON, WI – Marion Carol (Hoffman) Cybart, 79, of Oregon, passed away on Jan. 12, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare in Madison. She was born on June 20, 1936, in Pontiac, IL, the daughter of Donald and Hazel (Knobeloch) Hoffman. She graduated from Pontiac Township High School in 1955.
Carol always knew she wanted to be a nurse and worked as a nurse's aide for three years during high school at St. James Hospital in Pontiac. She earned her nursing degree from Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago in 1958, and worked as a registered nurse and head nurse in a hospital setting for 43 years until she retired in 2001. Carol began her career at Illinois Masonic Hospital as a medical floor nurse, then as an obstetrics nurse at St. James Hospital.
From 1963 to 2001, Carol worked as a registered nurse and head nurse in Bloomington-Normal, IL, at Mennonite Hospital and Bro-Menn Medical Center. At Mennonite, she started as an obstetrics nurse, then became head nurse of the obstetrics unit until it closed in 1968. Next, Carol started an ambulatory self-care unit, the first such unit in Illinois outside of Chicago, and served as head nurse from 1968 to 1979. During that time, she was also in charge of central dispensing, added gastroenterology and urology patients to the unit, and served Gailey Eye Clinic in-patients. In 1979, the self-care unit closed, evolving into an outpatient unit.
With a desire to get back to more direct patient care, she completed her career as a night shift nurse on a surgical unit from 1980 to 2001 at Mennonite, moving to Bro-Menn after the two hospitals merged. She enjoyed her work with surgical patients the most. Throughout her career, she worked a total of 27 years as a night nurse. It was her favorite shift -- she found it fulfilling to help patients get through their most difficult nights.
After retirement, Carol moved to Wisconsin to enjoy her family in Evansville. She had fun watching her grandchildren grow up and enjoyed being closely involved in their lives. Carol volunteered at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, starting to volunteer before she retired while on vacations to visit her Wisconsin family. Since 1999, she dedicated 919 hours of service to Olbrich Gardens. Carol assisted with office work and had the most fun as an event volunteer, greeting children and families who visited the annual holiday train show and summer butterfly exhibit. Carol was a 62-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, starting with membership in Job's Daughters. She was an eye donor to the Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin, inspired by her work with Gailey Eye Clinic patients.
Carol will be remembered for her dedication to nursing, love of family, and her cheerful outlook on life. She had a life-long love of music, played clarinet and saxophone in high school, and enjoyed listening to all types of music and attending concerts. Carol loved cats and everything about them, enjoying cat companions throughout her life. Since her nursing days started with starched white dresses and ended before nurses wore colorful scrubs, she did not want to wear white after retirement and was known for her fun, colorful clothing and jewelry. She brought a sweet spirit and upbeat sense of humor to everything she did and everyone she met.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Sharon Cybart and son-in-law, Lyman Fuson of Evansville; grandson, Clark Cybart-Fuson of Evansville; granddaughter, Hazel Cybart-Fuson of Madison; brother, Raymond Hoffman of Orlando, Fla.; and many special nieces and nephews.

I worked with Mrs. Cybart when I was a "candystriper" on the self-care unit at Mennonite Hospital. Her love for and dedication to her patients served as a role model for my future career as a nurse. She made a difference in so many patient's lives. She also was a dedicated mother.....she was always bragging about Sharon! You will be missed, my friend!
