MADISON–Dr. Luther T. Albert, age 92, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Oak Park Place. He was born on Aug. 19, 1923, in Miami Beach, Fla., the son on Erwin and Sadie (Kreider) Albert. Born and raised on the grounds of a riding academy owned by his father in North Miami, Fla., Luther worked as a riding instructor there while still in high school. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during WWII, and was pharmacist mate on a small landing craft. Luther earned a degree in dairying from the University of Florida in 1950; a doctorate of veterinary medicine from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in June of 1954; and a master's degree in agriculture from Florida in August of 1954. Dr. Albert came to Wisconsin later in 1954, to study swine disease. He was named Wisconsin State Veterinarian of the year in 1960. Dr. Albert centralized the animal care unit, and in 1962, he was made the assistant professor in the medical school and director of the center. He was also the Veteran's Administration Consultant at the VA Hospital. He was director and membership co-chairman of the Wisconsin Society for Medical Research and a member of the technical guidance committee of the Institute Laboratory Animal Resources of the National Academy of Sciences, which established national standards for laboratory animal technicians. Dr. Albert was a member of the Henry Vilas Zoological Society, the Madison Gyro club, the Madison Elks Lodge and was chair of the Madison Civil Defense committee. Dr. Albert is survived by a daughter; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren in Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 2010. It was Dr. Albert's wishes that no services be held. A private gathering will be held at a later time. The family would like to thank the special nurses, staff and residents at Oak Park for their love and care and a loving remembrance to brother-in-law, Dick Deering. I have not known this man personally, but have come into possession of his awards and photos from his navy days. I have sent these items to the Veterans Museum in downtown Madison for safe keeping. I hope that a member of his family will contact the Veterans Museum and offer some more information about this man.
The home he last owned had been cleared of all personal effects and many were discarded in dumpsters. The items were retrieved and brought to me. I can only hope that more of his family will come forward and offer clarification into the character and achievements of Luther T. Albert.
Please contact the Veterans Museum on the capital square. They are very interested in knowing more about him.
Thank you.
