MADISON–B. Gary Arseneau, age 69, passed away at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison on Friday, April 1, 2016, surrounded by his loved ones. Gary was born Dec. 22, 1946, in Superior, Wisconsin to Bernard and Doris (Larsen) Arseneau. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1965. Gary earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin - Superior and Master's Degree in Teaching from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. Gary moved to Madison in 1969 and dedicated a large part of his life to teaching and coaching youth. Gary was a beloved English teacher at Blackhawk Middle School (Gompers), where he spent 34 years as a 7th grade English teacher. He volunteered his evenings and weekends coaching his sons' youth teams in football, basketball, and baseball. Post-retirement, Gary continued to serve as a substitute teacher for the Madison Public Schools. Gary enjoyed spending his free time outdoors, walking, gardening, and sitting by the pool. He was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers. Gary is survived by his two sons, Tim (Sarah) Arseneau of Murrieta, California, and Greg (Allison) Arseneau of Naperville, Illinois; and his three grandchildren, Eric, Stella, and Griffin Arseneau; his sister, Debbie (Clark) Morse; and niece, Stacy. A private family service is planned. A public visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2016. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County. My husband and I have many fond memories of Mr. Arseneau. We both attended Gompers Middle School and remember him in his first years of teaching. He always had a smile on his face and really seemed to love teaching. So sorry for your loss. Blessings to your family!

I have many fond memories of working with Gary at Gompers in the early '80's. He always had a smile on his face and could make people laugh. He had a collection of loud neckties that he wore daily, and enjoyed the banter they provoked!
My sympathy goes out to all of his family. May you treasure good memories.

We grew up together in Superior and were team mates in all sports. We had a high school fraternity called the DC's and we sure had great times together. I am so sorry for your family's loss. As often happens. when we graduated from Central most of us left for college but got together when we returned home for breaks, again lots of fun memories. Unfortunately as we got older , got married and started our careers and families many of us lost touch with one another and for that I am sad that I didn't get to know more about Gary's teaching career, his boys and his life. The picture you have included is so wonderful as it is the look he would give me after he fed a pass to me on the basketball court or looked back at me in the huddle as we broke for the next play. A great high school friend who will be missed by all of his class mates 1965 Central High. God B less your family and Gary and may he Rest in Peace with the Lord.

I can still see Gary running around the basketball court at Superior Central High School. He may not have been as tall as some of the others, but he ran circles around many. I was also able to enjoy him here in Madison as well, as he taught with my husband at Blackhawk (Gompers). He was a sweet person, and is finally at peace. RIP Gary, you will be missed. Gary and I taught at Gompers Junior High in the early 70s. I well remember his easy-going, yet no-nonsense approach to teaching. He was a "natural". May God's peace be with you, his family and friends, at this time.

Mr. Arseneau was my 7th grade English teacher in 1970. He was so funny and one of the most popular teachers at Gompers. He was, by far, one of my favorite teachers. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sue Kopp
