Alton William Price

MONONA-Alton W. Price peacefully passed away early in the morning of Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at Attic Angels, the place he had called home for 3 1/2 years. He was the middle child of Julia (Icke) and Charles Price, born in Stevens Point on March 10, 1923. Alton was raised in Baraboo, where he graduated from Baraboo High School. After graduation he attended UW Madison - School of Engineering. Alton proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon returning to Madison, he finished at the UW with a degree in Civil Engineering. He became the engineer for the Village of Monona and later worked with Icke Construction, retiring in 1981. Alton was the loving father of Gillian (Tim) Lechmaier; wonderful grandfather to Kimberly (Jim) Soat, Matthew (Lauren) Lechmaier and Becca (Nate) Wortinger; and great-grandfather to Hazel Lechmaier and Isla, Harper, Elsie and Ava Soat, who brought more joy to dad than they will ever know. He is further survived by sister-in-law, Mary Price; nieces and nephews, Kathy, Cindy, Jeff, John and Barb; cousin, Norma from England; as well as friends he loved as family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Roma in 2014; daughter, Diane in 1982; his parents; brother, Calvin; and sister, Janette. Alton was a very gentle and soft spoken man, with a very welcoming smile. This he kept until his last day. Everyone noticed and enjoyed dad's smile. He planned his garden all winter, started everything from seed, and had complete joy working all the garden had to offer by making soups and great food, which he delighted in giving away to friends. He was known for his homemade bread, which many were privileged to get. Alton volunteered for over 25 years with Meals on Wheels. Through this he developed many long friendships. He was the guest of the Badger Honor Flight in 2013. It was a day he thoroughly enjoyed. Dad built our family home in Monona along with a few other subcontractors. He had a basement that contained almost everything from which he was able to build almost ANYTHING! We didn't need a 'fix-it' man because we had dad! A celebration of Alton's life will be held at MONONA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 606 Nichols Rd., Monona, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017, with the Rev. Brad Van Fossen presiding. Visitation will take place at GUNDERSON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2017, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity or organization of your choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Al Musa for his years of care and friendship, and the entire staff of Attic Angels for their wonderful care, support and friendship.
