Dr. Yu Chen

MADISON/ZHENZHOU, CHINA–Dr.Yu Chen, age 43, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, as a result of an accident on Lake Mendota.  He was born on Dec. 30, 1973, in Zhenzhou, China, the son of Xiao Xu and Guoshun Chen.  Dr. Chen studied nuclear physics at Peking University from 1990-1998, first as an undergraduate and then a master student.  After graduation, he went on to receive his Ph.D.  in Nuclear and Medical Physics from the University of Michigan, where he conducted postdoctoral research in Radiation Oncology.  In 2007, Dr. Chen moved to Madison, where he had since worked as a Senior Medical Physicist.  He was a member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.  Dr. Chen was a very kind and genuine man.  He was deeply dedicated to his work and helping others.  Dr. Chen was involved in a variety of sports and was an avid windsurfer.  He was a volunteer instructor at the Hoofer Sailing Club, where he generously donated his time and talent in teaching other people the water sport that he truly loved.  Dr. Chen is survived by his mother, Xiao Xu; and many friends.  A Celebration of Dr. Chen’s’s Life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2017.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the celebration on Saturday.
