Obituary
MADISON/CAMBRIDGE/LOCKPORT, IL-MaryAnn Filipowicz, age 69, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at UW Hospital. She was born on June 29, 1948, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Chester and Jessie (Bittler) Filipowicz. Above all things, her greatest joys were her family, especially her children and her grandchildren. Mary was always postitive, cheerful, and never complained. Mary was incredibly creative, she loved painting, quilting, and other arts. She especially loved creating crafts with her grandchildren. She had an overall love of music and enjoyed singing and dancing. She was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church and sang in the Bethel choir for many years. Mary was a very spiritual and compassionate woman who self-identified as an “opinionated lifelong democrat”. Mary was very proud to have celebrated 35 years of sobriety, receiving her token on the day of her death. In those 35 years, she helped many people through their own journey to sobriety. Mary is survived by her children, Jesse (Michelle) Richards and Johanna "Jodi" (Jamy) Hewitt; sister, Iris Filipowicz; two brothers, John (Monika) Filipowicz and Paul (Kate) Filipowicz; seven grandchildren, Connor and Paige Richards, and Jacob, Jonah, JosiAnna, Julia, and Jennifer Hewitt; five nephews, Erik (Mary) Filipowicz, Paul Daniel of California, Lamar, Karl Filipowicz, and Bryan (Andrea) Filipowicz; three nieces, Melanie Fillipowicz, Christina (Sean) Galow, and Stephanie (Christopher) Schneider; six great-nephews, Spencer Callaway, Will Galow, Brayden Filipowicz, Wade Filipowicz, Eli Filipowicz, and Parker Filipowicz; four great-nieces, Alex Mohrman, Emily Galow, Grace Schneider, and Sydney Filipowicz; and cousins, Mary Durrer of Arizona, Bridget Melendez, Peter Melendez, Robert Flavin of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; step mother, Dorothy "Dottie" Filipowicz; and cousin, Walter “Wally” Fredrick. Funeral services will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018, with Rev. John Swanson presiding. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2018, and also at the Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mary You were my best friend for over 30 years. You and I worked together, played together and recovered together. We had some fun times; camping, road trips, dancing, Summer fest, festivals, the list is endless...but most of all you were like a sister to me; always there for me. You always listened, opened your heart, and had advice. You told me what I needed to hear not always what I wanted to hear. You assured me when I doubted myself. No one can replace the void I feel. You were like an aunt to my kids. Megan has the fondest memories of our times together. I will always remember you for the kind, funny, giggly, big hearted person you were and how you affected my life and my recovery. I will be forever thankful for the friend you were and to have had you in my life. Love you Mary. RIP.
