I just read Lou's obituary. I have known him, through St. Dunstan's, as an intelligent, witty, gentle man. Most often seen--to the end--with a twinkle in his eye. While I knew he was accomplished in his field, his life was seemingly filled with one geological adventure, discovery and innovation after another! With your assistance, Jane, your husband lived a full and rewarding life. Peace and love to you and your family. Gail Jordan-Jones

Shocking, I am now older than Dr. Maher was when in the Summer of 1986 @ UW Madison I stumbled into his amazing Introductory Geology class. His lectures were captivating, incorporating a slideshow highlighting fundamental geological processes & features studied. Imaginatively the class introduced to Geology from the perspective of rafting the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon! Dr. Maher's passion for geology proved contagious. In later years I too explored the rivers of the Southwest [Colorado and San Juan], and have made four overnight trips to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I owe such gratitude to your husband for his unforgettable lectures & beautiful spirit. As accurately described in the obituary, I enjoyed the field trip (school bus driven by the professor himself!) to Sauk County, inspecting the local geological features about Devil's Lake. Later that day our class scoured a local quarry for minerals. I found a beautiful chunk of glacial deposited natural copper & gave it to him. Incidentally, if you guys still have that piece, I'll gladly buy it. If, however, it's a family memento, no problem. Saddened to read of his passing, especially by the wicked progression of alzheimer's disease. I have such fond memories of him three decades later! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10202312011313370&type=1&l=78e77fcc03 John D Schweitzer Baltimore MD schweitzerjohn114@gmail.com

I am saddened to learn of Lou Maher's passing. As a graduate student in the 80's, my initial meeting with Lou was in an orientation as a new TA to one of his large introductory geology classes. He was direct, no nonsense and somewhat gruff. My take away- avoid the Department Chairman at all cost. What I discovered after my first class with him was nothing like my first impression. Lou was gregarious, inclusive and funny- I mean really funny. He had quick wit and a sense of humor- somewhat subversive at times, that was always right on the mark. I think of Lou Maher's work on the glacial and climatic history of Wisconsin every time I drive from the moraines of Madison to our home in Vilas County. My sincere sympathies to the Maher Family.
