Obituary
STOUGHTON—Jean Hudkins, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, one day shy of her 94th birthday. She was born in Avilla, Ind., the daughter of Earl and Jennie (Halferty) Faux. Jean married Billy Hudkins on April 12, 1949, and they relocated to Wisconsin where she spent the rest of her life. Jean attended Wittenberg College, the Columbia County Normal School, and received a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from UW-Madison. She taught at Burritt, East, Kegonsa, and Yahara Schools and was proud to be Stoughton’s Teacher of the Year. Jean was an avid reader, gardener, and painter. She touched many lives. Jean is survived by her children, Bill of Mazomanie, Susan Martens of Arena, Mary Beth (Doug) Schall of Mazomanie, and Thomas (Cindy) of Stoughton; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husband; sisters, Mary and Beth; and son, Dan. Family and friends are invited to the Celebration of Jean’s life at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Hwy. 51, Stoughton, from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, and at THE BASE CAMP CAFÉ, 18 Brodhead Street, Mazomanie, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2018. Please join us in honoring this special lady and her life. Thank you to caregivers Deb, Carolyn, and Diane and many other friends who have supported her over the years, visiting or checking in often. I didn't know your mother well, but I knew she was very well-regarded by her fellow teachers and administrators. Bill was the on,y one of you 5 children I did not have in one of my Spanish classes over the tears at SHS, and having known you all as great kids, I knew your Mom had to be a wonderful mother. Until I read her obit I didn't know that Dan had passed away. Such a bright guy,! And always pushing against the limits! Susan, I thought I recognized you at The Old Feed Mill in Mazomanie a few years ago but wasn't sure, and you were bust serving customers. I wish I'd said hello even if it wasn't you. I worked with Jean back in the middle to late 70's and came to know and love her as a genuine friend and outstanding educator. Jean had such a positive outlook upon life; loved teaching and generously shared her expertise and enthusiasm with me. She was motivated to explore new ways in which to reach every child through hands on learning in the areas of reading and math instruction. Always a teacher, always a friend, always a life coach in many ways. Thank you, Jean, for your many gifts. May your soul rest in eternal peace.

I will always remember with happiness all the years of creative projects we worked on together through her last three gardens.
I admired her way of embracing the present and not dwelling on the past.She was engaged and enthusiastic about life at all times.
We had an arrangement that she would e-mail me twice a day for the last several years to check in.I received the last one the day she died.She said she could go for some bleu cheese.She was living in the moment till the end.

I met Jean after she moved into her little house on Chicago St. I have a home across the street which is now a rental property. We visited like we'd known each other for yrs She shared her artwork & gardening skills with me. She was a dear soul!
