I send my hugs and my most sincere sympathy to the family. Gosh. I am so very sorry for your loss. Your dad was BRAVE, for sure, and showed me what a man could do with the cards he was dealt. Amazing man with an amazing family. It was my great privilege to know you all.

Bill and JoAnn were as a second set of parents to me, they took me along on many ski and hunting trips with my adopted brothers and sister Mark, Elizabeth and David. We racked up a lot of quality time together working on the farm and travel, one of the most wonderful families to know. Glad i was allowed to join in. Casey O'Keefe

Dr. Hoekstra was very influential in my life, perhaps without really knowing it. In the '70s, I took his class, "Principles of Human and Animal Nutrition", and really liked it. I pursued a Master's degree in Nutritional Sciences from UW, and worked as a dietitian for 23 years. He was a great teacher, and it didn't hurt that he had a good Dutch name, which is my heritage on my Mom's side (Vander Velde)! Errol Hartman

Loved him and his wife JoAnn. Two very special people that my husband and I were blessed enough to have met in our life. Sad for him passing, yet finally he is with his beloved wife together again drinking their 4 o'clock Old Fashions (which we looked forward to everyday spending time with them). It has been a very long time coming, as I know Jo Ann has been waiting for him. He and she will be missed leaving a whole down her for family and friends, but a happiness up there! God Bless you our friend. One day we will all be seeing each other again. I know you and she are very happy now.

Bill Hoekstra was an exceptionally nice person as well as a brilliant scientist. While I was a DeLuca postdoc, Bill was very helpful in providing suggestions for faculty positions in the 1968-1971 period. Joining the trace element field in the 1970's is was good to have Bill's perspective and feedback in my early faculty years.
