I went to Hawthorne from ‘59-‘66, and remember being a “bit” scared of Mr. Sturdevant. Not because he tried to intimidate me, but because of how he so effectively used his voice to gently show authority. Plus I was a timid kid, so it took almost nothing for me to be “a bit scared”. The one time I was sent to the office, I sat in his own office as I recall. He was businesslike because he had to be, but kind.
He and my late Dad were fellow Kiwanians, and for decades sold hot dogs at Regent and Breese Terrace. All the times I bought a hot dog and can of pop from him I could never address him as anything other than Mr. Sturdevant. He would always chuckle and ask how I was doing.
My condolences to the Sturdevant family. He was a very good man.
