Obituary

MADISON-Lt. Col. (Ret.) Brian Robbins Downey, born November 13, 1948, in Saginaw, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on June 6, 2020, at his home in Madison, Wisconsin. He was 71 years old. Brian was the son of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Burleigh Robbins Downey Jr., long-time journalist, WKAR radio personality and community member. His mother, Josephine W. Downey, was an executive secretary, teacher, and realtor with HDI and Coldwell Banker/Hacker. Brian was preceded in death by both parents. It’s impossible to sum up a rich and meaningful life such as his, so we won’t even attempt it. But here are some things about Bri we loved and admired. He was smart, diplomatic, funny, and an ace strategist and problem solver. When analyzing a complex situation or debating a topic, he was always 4 steps ahead of the other person, which came in very handy in chess games. He was big-hearted, loyal, sentimental, and the first one to offer help to anyone in need. He was a man of his word, full of integrity. Brian was a natural teacher, patient, logical and adept at pitching explanations to the level of his audience. He served his country proudly and won many Federal, State and International awards for outstanding service, some of which he won multiple times. He held marksman and sharpshooter qualifications and trained others to that level. His loyalty and fierce dedication to his country was only surpassed by his love and devotion to his family. You always knew he would be there in a heart beat for you, no questions asked. Throughout his life he held positions of responsibility in the private sector, as well as in the military, and was an entrepreneur and innovator. He taught at the War College and he was a crisis communication consultant, advising top Generals and CEOs to prepare them to face the press in high-profile crisis situations. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts and with Friends of the NRA, with whom he was working on several community-related projects which he hoped to bring to fruition. Brian had an active interest in NASA and made several trips to see Saturn V launches. In fact, he and his Dad had press passes to film one of the Apollo launches. He had many other hobbies, interests and loves, including backpacking, mountain climbing, cross-country skiing, acting, music, photography, firearms target practice, and politics, to name just a few. He and his family loved traveling to various national parks, with Yosemite being his favorite. He was a devoted husband and the best Dad a young man could ever hope for. He relished his role as Dad and offered a strong shoulder and listening ear to his family, Pat’s many friends, and anyone who needed it. Now, in case you didn’t know him well, this last point is quintessentially significant: He was decidedly a Coca Cola man. If YOU own stock in it, you may want to run to your stock broker, as Coca Cola is about to experience a BIG drop in demand. Brian’s passing has left an irreparable hole in the lives and hearts of all who knew and loved him. He leaves behind his beautiful Dutch bride and loving wife of nearly 25 years, Lotte van Aalzum Downey and his pride and joy in this life, son Patrick Robbins Anthonius Downey, who is graduating from James Madison Memorial High School in just a few days. With Pat he shared the love of all things military, and they spent many happy times at the shooting range and in developing training for hunter safety. Bri was hands down the best husband, Dad, friend, and big brother a girl could ever have (and we told him that often, but not enough). He is deeply missed by Lotte and Pat, his two sisters, Jo Ellen Downey-Greer (Sam Greer) of East Lansing, Michigan, and Karen Downey Gartside (Julien Gartside) of Zurich, Switzerland; as well as his brothers-in-law, Peter van Aalzum (Liz), Jan van Aalzum (Carin); and his sister-in-law, Annette Hendriks (Charly). Brian was very special to his nephews, Aaron, Stephan, Sander, Maarten and Alexandre; and nieces, Rachael, Danielle, Alison, Desiree, Elena, and Isabella. He was loved by so many relatives and friends, especially by his honorary brother and sister, Tim McLaughlin and Yeon Hong Min of Okemos Michigan. A private memorial service will be held at Gunderson Fitchburg Funeral and Cremation Care with interment to follow at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan. Friends and family who wish to view the memorial service via LIVE STREAM may visit this page and click on the “Watch Webcast” link (underneath his obituary photo) at 11:00 am on Monday. Memorials may be made in Brian’s memory to any of the following organizations with whom both you and he resonate: Boy Scouts of America - Brian was working with them to get the membership fees covered automatically for children of parents who are deployed. We are not aware of the status of this project - or even if it still exists but we know it mattered to Brian: scouting.org Friends of the NRA - An organization that supports youth shooting sports. They also help disabled men and women have the ability to shoot. Brian and Patrick were involved with this group as well as the arm that supports and provides gun safety training to youths and hunters: friendsofnra.org Make a Wish Foundation - Brian and Lotte have had several friends whose children have been affected by cancer: wish.org Chicago Jazz Philharmonic - One of 5 “third stream” orchestras in the world. Gunther Schuller coined the term "Third Stream" in 1957 to describe a new musical genre merging jazz and classical traditions. CJP also has an educational arm which is very active on the South Side of Chicago. They view Third Stream as a way to bridge communities, educate the next generation of musicians, encourage cross cultural dialogue, and expand creative practice. Brian loved both classical and jazz music. He also believed in the pursuit of well thought out, practical solutions to complex problems that address the roots of the issues, not the soundbites and political easy points. Given the context of the world this week - we felt it was important to include this group: chicagojazzphilharmonic.org Gunderson Fitchburg Funeral & Cremation Care 2950 Chapel Valley Rd. Lotte, Patrick and family no words can express how deeply sorry I am for your loss. I had the pleasure of knowing Brian the past several years, my first memory being a winter survival camping trip he was attending with Patrick. I thought what a crazy brave man he was...in the cold, with all those little guys! Brian dealt with all of us girls hanging out there laughing, carrying on and having a great time til all hours of the night. He probably learned more about knitting from our book, knitting and wine nights than he ever dreamed he would know! Brian was so easy going, hanging out with us some, popping in and out. He always welcomed us warmly into his home. What a great man! More than anything, it was easy to see his love and devotion to Lotte and Patrick. Brian, you will be greatly missed.

Dearest Lotte, little sis, & Patrick, With you we were devastated when we heard the news of your so beloved Brian having passed away totally unexpected. Brian was a modest, most gentle, sympathetic guy a great hubby for you Lotte and the best dad you could have wished for, Patrick. I know it is hard now, but the day will come you see what a wonderful live Brian has given you. I know he was proud to be your husband/ your dad. I am so glad, that every time we visited the USA we met up with you guys as being together was difficult due to that huge pool of water in between us. I remember once when we stayed with you in Alameda and you and Brian took Brigitte & myself for a wine tour. There was that winery where we had lunch in the garden and the signs stated we could not bring our own stuff with us only what we bought there. We bought food, but Brian went to the car put a bottle of wine we bought elsewhere in a neutral paper bag, put on his most innocent face and offered us a drink. Time has past and Brigitte passed away not all that long ago and I found Liz (correction: she handpicked me). We were supposed to head for the USA only a few days from today and meeting up with you in July when Brian and Liz could have met and we would have spent a great time together. I am sure they would have gotten along very well as they both are easy going. Although we did not see much of each other I will miss you terribly. Peter & Liz

Brian was a great neighbor , growing up in East Lansing , Mi. Our families continued that friendship on through the years . My outstanding memory of Brian was when our son , Joe , was in Cub Scouts in Holt , Mi, and I was in charge of running the Pinewood Derby Races. I was looking for Judges for the race and I called Brian to see if he was interested . He said absolutely and came in full uniform , [The boys went nuts ! ] and he brought a whole box of treats for the scouts ,pencils , mugs, etc. from The National Guard. I think we did this for 2-3 years back in the mid 90's and enjoyed his company everytime . Joe also admired Brian and looked forward to seeing him there and I think that in part encouraged him to become an Eagle Scout . He was always a good friend growing up in the Flower Pot . Our thoughts are with your family . RIP Brian .

My dearest sister Lotte and sweet Patrick,  I am so sorry that you have lost a wunderful  husband and father.  I remember Brian as a kind and gentle man. When talking with him he made me forget that I am actually somewhat shy.  25 years ago I was present at your wedding, Lotte, it was difficult for our parents and me that you were going to live so far away, but Brian immediately won me over when I met him. During the vacations spent in Michigan,  California and later Wisconsin when I stayed at your house with Sander and Maarten, Brian was a perfect host. He understood how important it was for us, Lotte to spend time together and he gave us plenty opportunity to do so. Brian always made people feel good about themselves,  made them feel relaxed and at ease.   I remember the gentle and patient way Brian was talking with Sander and Maarten, genuinly interested in what they were telling him.    Dear sister and Patrick,  we know how great his love was for you.  We will greatly miss him.  Love ,   Charly,  Annette, Sander and Maarten.

I also have warm memories about the time Brian and you, Lotte, visited me in Las Vegas where we had some quality time together over a nice dinner togehter. We also had a good time at the 85th birthday celebration of our mom in Mijdrecht, where Brain and you Partick and Lotte were present. Brian and Carin talked about many beautiful places in the US. Lotte and Patrick - I didn't know Brian well but in the few times I saw him it was so obvious what a gentle, caring man he was. My favorite memory is from your surprise birthday party at the Sow's Ear a few years ago. He was so quiet, but he had the biggest, happiest grin on his face. He loved you both so much. You're a beautiful family. Sending loving hugs from Florida.
