Obituary

MADISON - William Edward “Bill” Redman Jr., age 88, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at UW Hospital and Clinics. The family would like to extend their gratitude for their care. Bill was born on Nov. 15, 1932, in Rochester, Minn., the son of William and Elsie (Rosenbrock) Redman. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1955. Bill obtained a Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., in 1959. He married Phyllis (Hedlund) Redman on June 9, 1957. They were married 63 years and experienced the joy of raising a family and sharing their lives in church service together. Bill began serving as a Pastor in 1959 at Mount Carmel Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. He moved on to Immanuel Lutheran and Springdale Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb, followed by Central Lutheran Church in Edgerton. He returned to Mount Horeb and served at Evangelical Lutheran Church, retiring in 1995. He was also a visiting pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Door County over many summers. Bill enjoyed running, golf, football, gardening, reading and vacations with his family, including many trips to Door County, Florida and Hawaii. He participated in several marathons and charitable runs and was often seen running through the countryside on rural roads around Mount Horeb. During his service to all of these churches Bill was known for his empathy and quiet leadership, and his joy in serving people. To his family, he was a loving father and husband, whose support was unwavering. They always knew he would be there for them. Bill is survived by his wife, Phyllis; children, Joel (Barbara), Renee (John) and Phillip (Kristen); as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald. A memorial service will be held at EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Friday June 4, 2021, with Rev. John Twiton presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Sending deepest sympathy for your loss. Pastor Bill touched many lives and it mattered not what church or situation you were in. As a home care nurse In the Mt Horeb area I had a patient share one of those encounters. She told me of her being gravely ill and was not expected to live. Although she was not a member of Pastor Bill’s church, she shared that she was aware that he visited her and was present by her side in the hospital. She shared that he had taken her hand and prayed with her. She said that all she could see of him was his face which had a bright glowing light around it. She then shared with me his prayer. Her family acknowledged he had visited but told her she couldn’t have heard him as she was unresponsive and she wouldn’t know he was there. This delightful lady said he was the one who gave her hope and light to live. I shared that story years ago with Pastor Bill shortly after she shared it with me in her home following her discharge from the hospital. He also visited me when I was hospitalized and I too was not one of his parishioners. I remember only one funeral message of all of my family members who have died. It was given by Pastor Bill for my Grandpa Charlie. Pastor Bill shared that Grandpa’s death date was really his birthday into heaven and we must celebrate his heavenly birthday and rejoice that he was now in heaven. That message was given to us in 1975! In your mourning of physical loss I pray that Pastor Bill’s very own words be of comfort to you. He was one of God’s chosen. May his love, which never dies , be with you always. May God hold you all close in this time of loss.

So sorry to learn of Pastor Bill’s death. We enjoyed having him at his pastor so much. He baptized our son, Bill. I remember him playing softball on the flat on the Spaanem/Bilse farm after the baptismal meal. May he Rest In Peace. The Elver family.
