Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Raymond John “Ray” Cunneen II, age 95, passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 1, 2021. He was born on the Cunneen dairy farm in Mount Horeb on June 16, 1925. Raymond was a World War II veteran, entering the service at 18 years of age. He arrived on Omaha Beach six weeks after the Battle of Normandy began and continued his service for the next 18 months. Ray was a recipient of the Bronze Star for his conduct in ground battle and the Purple Heart for injuries he received in action in Germany. Ray was honorably discharged in 1945. He was only 20 years old. Post war, he started working for the U.S. Post Office in Mount Horeb in 1946 as a mail carrier and retired as a supervisor of Postal Operations in 1980. Ray married Mavis Hustad in 1948 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Mount Horeb. They bought a home and had five children, Vicki (Russ) Devitt, Karen (Jerry) Martinson, Ray (Jane) Cunneen, Patti (John) Cox and Mark (Darlene) Cunneen. Mavis passed away in 1983 and Ray continued to live in their home for the next 34 years. Ray met May Jones a few years after Mavis’ passing and they became golfing and traveling companions for the next few decades until her death in 2014. He was an avid golfer, winning numerous trophies. Ray was a lifetime member and the longest serving member of the American Legion in Mount Horeb. For many years, he volunteered to honor veterans by placing flags on their graves every Memorial Day. He also served on the cemetery committee for St. Ignatius. Ray loved gardening, photography, coin and stamp collecting. He was also skilled in making and displaying numerous outdoor holiday decorations. At age 70, Ray learned how to use a computer and was able to create cards to send to family and friends. He truly enjoyed his 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. IGNATIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 109 S. 6th St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 7, 2021. Our family's deepest sympathy to your family. I remember Ray's gentle smile and kind eyes. He always seemed to have a gentleness about him, even around when we were just kids running around Grandma Hustad's house on Christmas Day. He will be missed by many. May your memories of your dad bring you strength and comfort now and always.
