Obituary

CROSS PLAINS - Amanda Butler, age 24, passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2022. She had been diagnosed with borderline personality and had spent years successfully fighting the ultimately overwhelmingly mental, emotional, and physical challenges that associate with this condition.

Amanda was born on Sept. 10, 1997, to Ken and Peggy Butler. She graduated from Middleton High School in 2016. She was a beloved member of the District 1 EMS. She was certified as a CPR instructor, a state and national EMT, ACLS, PALS, CNA, and ER technician. She had a bachelor’s degree in arts and was currently a COVID vaccinator.

Her personal dedication to be of service to humanity was demonstrated in her unsuccessful, yet hard road to acquire a degree in nursing and with aspirations to be a nurse practitioner. Her greatest wish was to be of service to others, especially those with mental health issues. To honor her legacy, we request that instead of flowers you consider donation to the suicide prevention of your choice.

Amanda is survived by her parents, Ken and Peggy Butler; her brother, Josh; her grandmothers, Kay (Bob) Kavanaugh and Shirley Butler; aunts, Tammy Burcar (John) and Mary Butler; uncle, Jim Butler; and her very special therapy dog, Denali, who will be staying with us to help us move on. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Paul Burcar and August Butler.

A celebration of her life will be held at the CROSS PLAINS FIRE DEPARTMENT, 1501 Bourbon Road, Cross Plains, from 12 noon until 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2022. Please drop in anytime you are able. RSVP to amandabutlercelebration@gmail.com.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations in her name be made to NAMI https://www.namidanecounty.org an organization that is dedicated to helping those with mental health issues.

A special thank you her friends who continued to support and help Amanda over the years. She was a shining light to all those she came across. We ask you to remember her that way. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I've known Amanda for several years after meeting her through Peggy and then running with District One. Amanda was an extremely caring person and was great to run with. Anything I felt less confident with she backed me up on and we got to run together even though neither of us felt ready to crew chief. She put on a brave face that she carried day to day. The past few months vaccinating together in stations separated by a curtain I'd randomly leave a pile of the suckers she liked or would throw a stuffed animal over the curtain when I didn't hear much sound coming from the other side. We did plant drawings at EMS in downtime but mine never were as good as hers. Her drive to help the community and be there for others was visible daily. Our last conversation was on the rig while her and Peggy did check in. I was grumbling about the candy I got so we dumped our bags out. Amanda took the ones I didn't want, gave me the ones I liked and Peggy picked the rest. I don't have a single negative memory of Amanda or even a neutral one. Only positives which I'll carry forever. Peggy, Ken and Josh. Thinking of your family. Here if you need.

I taught Amanda at Alverno in her senior capstone course. It was during Covid so much of the work was done online, but I did have opportunities to Zoom with Amanda one-on-one. Our conversations and her work helped me know her as an intelligent and reflective person. She was honest about her challenges as well as how she contributed to the world around her. It was obvious in every conversation that she was a deeply caring person. Alverno was fortunate to have her as a student and I was glad to work with her while she was at the College. Please know that all of us at Alverno are holding your family in our thoughts in a special way during this very difficult time. -- Trish Lewis

I started Alverno’s DEMSN program last semester and I stayed in the dorms where Amanda also stayed. I was missing my dog at home and would see Denali here and there with Amanda and wanted to ask her if she needed to dog sit but kept missing my chance. It was by luck that I came across Amanda in the computer lab one day, she was super kind and inviting and we talked about school and living in the dorms and of course, how we both love dogs. I then got to spend my Thursdays dog sitting sweet Denali and had the honor of getting to know Amanda. Amanda was so caring and sweet towards everyone and was a caring friend in a new place for me. She was so intelligent, driven and had such an inviting and calming energy. I once lost Denali’s training remote while on a walk and was freaking out because I know they are expensive and I couldn’t find it anywhere. I was so afraid she would be mad but Amanda was so reassuring and kind and helped me find it. I knew that those qualities would make her the best nurse, her ability to calm others down and be so understanding and real. She had this immense drive to help others and she definitely helped me through my first semester, she gave me study tips and old notes and genuinely wanted to see me succeed. She would send me cute pictures of Denali when I was having a stressful time in school and was always there to listen and support me and anyone else around her no matter what she herself was going through. Even when she left Alverno, she always stayed in touch and was a caring and supportive friend. This news breaks my heart. The world lost an amazing soul and nurse to be. I’m grateful to have met you, and am glad you and Denali were a part of my life, even though it was ended too soon. I miss you Amanda. ❤️

Amanda was always sweet and caring I remembered when at her first her dog didn’t like me because of my bonnet lol! Amanda would always make sure that I was okay and that if I needed anything I could ask her. One of the sweetest souls I have ever met. Miss you love you Amanda.

I lived next door to Amanda in the dorms at Alverno back in 2019 and always enjoyed our talks, hangouts in my room watching Bachelor/Bachelorette, and seeing her beautiful/sweet dog Denali. She was always so kind and caring and am grateful that we were able to get to know each other a little bit. You will be deeply missed Amanda. My thoughts and prayers go out to her dog Denali and her entire family. #alvernostrong
