Roan was a classmate in the Masters of Education program at Vermont College of Union Institute and University. It had been 30 years since I got my BA and I was a little daunted returning to academia. Roan was further along in the program, and helped me with suggestions for my reading list, suggestions for seminars to enroll in etc. I enjoyed his sense of humor and down to earth approach. I've been impressed by his spiritual and intellectual journey over the years. He will be missed. My condolences to his family and friends. To Martha and Roan‘s family To meet a new friend, and I mean new friend, six or seven months before their passing is no different than knowing that person your whole life when that person is Roan Kaufman. While I only met Roan in July during a workshop intensive we soon had so much in common from our early days as musicians in bands to later days as educators on a spiritual path. Witnessing Roan and Martha together as they worked through his illness and recovery and recurrence, I not only felt great respect but deep love and compassion for them both. Though we may die alone we may also have companions with us who are there the whole way . I know I’ve been playing this song which Roan played me during our workshop, Nick Cave’s “into my arms,“ and I’ve mentioned it or played it to others all week. So Roan lives on. life goes on and and yet deep sadness stays with me for the great ones who aren’t quite as within reach as they once were only six months ago…thank you Roan for crossing my path and giving me your blessings, for sharing your insights and love. I’m sending you and Martha and your families much love now. Howie Hwiseman@rogers.com

I only had the opportunity to meet Roan once, but I could tell from our limited interactions he was a very caring and supportive human. Through his research and care, he leaves this world a better place than he found it.
