Obituary

VERONA - Philip Smithson Jr., age 93, of Verona, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, at UW Hospital, Madison. He was born on May 21, 1929, in Moyock, N.C., the son of Philip Smithson and Ellen (Barnacastle) Smithson Fields.


Philip graduated from Moyock, N.C. High School. He married Rosemary Fisher Smithson on Dec. 21, 1951, in Elizabeth City, N.C. He served in the U.S. Army.


Philip worked as a Turbine Operator for Madison Gas and Electric for 31 years. He was avid vegetable gardener and a flea market enthusiast. He enjoyed watching wildlife. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.


Philip is survived by wife, Rosemary; sons, David (Monica) Smithson and Mike (Tami) Smithson; daughter, Rosemarie (Ron) Dresen; brother, Wealey (Ann) Smithson; nine grandchildren, Carrie, Marcy, Brad, Tara, Amanda, Candice, Nathan, Jenna and Summer; and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Smithson; father, Philip Smithson Sr.; mother, Ellen Smithson Fields; brother, Louis Smithson; and sisters, Virginia Cutrell and Grace Hines.


Services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Salvation Army and Tunnels to Towers. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
